"Moreover, CDC Director Tom Frieden’s assurances that the US will stop Ebola “in its tracks” is based on a strong track record by public health systems in the US and beyond. Not only have similar viruses to Ebola arrived in the US before and been successfully contained, but four US health care workers diagnosed with Ebola all survived after receiving treatment in the US."

"Nigeria was under threat of an outbreak when a Liberian man diagnosed with the disease traveled to Lagos earlier this summer. With inadequate and fragile infrastructure, Lagos – Africa’s most populous city – was seen as vulnerable to an outbreak. Yet “swift action, including tracing nearly all exposed people and creating facilities to isolate them during the needed 21-day monitoring period, stopped the virus cold,” writes Michael Smith, a correspondent for MedPage Today."

I am more concerned than some and not as scared as others. The chicken littles could be right, but it's unlikely. However, I am not one to dismiss this as a microscopically low threat either. Going airborne yes, but even regular sneezing or whatever can cause major issues given the 3 week gestation phase. Ever been in line somewhere and have someone sneeze on you for instance? Thousands of people could potentially have this and not know it yet.

I'm not singling you out, Courtland, but this phrase sums up things perfectly for me...people are willing to freak out over these highly unlikely and implausible scenarios, yet ignore the many things they do or go on around them on a daily basis...the things so much more likely to actually kill or harm them.

UNT 90 puts more people in harm's way everyday with his texting and GMG posting on his daily commute than ebola could ever dream of threatening. I can think of about a dozen ways one is in far more peril on a game-day Saturday at Apogee than run the risk of contracting this virus.

My biggest question in all of this is when it all blows over and there's maybe 2 infected people, what will you guys have to be afraid of next?

I am afraid for sure, I do hope it blows over for sure. Not sure why anything you have read would make you think this is a walk in the park. Even if this infection is contained what is keeping others from fleeing to the US, I would if I was in Liberia and I thought I was exposed. If you have read the handling of this event in Dallas it is a joke, and there already is plenty of opportunity for this thing to have gotten away from them. They had not isolated the complex or cleaned it yet as of last night. You get that this is highly contagious and makes most other deadly viruses look like a slight cold.

That is not to say I am in panic mode, I am in concerned mode and watching, not writing this off 3 miles from me sorry.

Are you reading the news there has not been any clean up, if you get a micro-droplet in your eye for instance you have it, most likey, so take the vomit that sat there in the apartment parking lot for hours looking like wet spots (that at last report has not been cleaned). Someone walks through takes off shoe touches sole rubs eyes, crosses leg gets on couch, pants, then touches body face eye. Children roll round on floor after it was tracked into house. Etc. Why no one is willing to do the cleanup, professional agencies understand how bad this is and don't want the exposure. Read the New York Times piece on delay in Dallas. I wonder why this whole complex was not napalmed with Clorox bleach ten minutes after they figured out what they were dealing with.

And these folks may not show systems for 21 days and it would likely be a few days before decide to go to the hospital or get weeded out. That's if they go to the hospital they may be afraid.

ok.

now...having not had one, could you go down the list of ingredients and preparation techniques for your famous tail-gate balls? I assume they go well with beer/liquor? and then you likely drive home from the game, no?

so, I'll offer a wager, UNT90 style...if you die of ebola, I'll make a $100 contribution to the Mean Green Club in your honor. If, instead, you die of heart disease, liver failure or any sort of traffic-related fatality your estate has to make a $100 donation in my name.

deal?

No one in this thread will die of Ebola. At least one person in this thread will die of heart disease, at least a couple will die of cancer, the way the I35 project is going the likely hood of one of us being killed in a car wreck is pretty good.

You know who has a relatively high chance of being killed by Ebola? Those poor bastards who by chance of fate happened to be born in West Africa. If you really want to stop people from dying of Ebola, donate to MSF.

Lol. How many people has ebola killed? I know that I haven't killed anyone.

And maybe, just maybe, I joke about texting and driving to get under the skin of the politicly correct jackasses like you that frequent this place. Does CBL ever tune the radio in his car? Same as texting. Does CBL ever have a conversation with a passenger in his car? Same as texting. Does CBL ever read the gawdawful UNT billboards when he is driving around DFW when he comes to town? Same as texting. Has CBL came out against dash mounted nav systems in new vehicles? Same as texting.

No, CBL is too focused on what the media tells him to be focused on to realize that there are a million distractions while driving, and that texting is just one of them. CBL is too focused to realize that anyone one of these distractions at exactly the wrong time can cause a fatality accident, which is why you can't pick and choose which one you outlaw.

But back to Ebola. I'm sure CBL doesn't think it's a big deal, living in the NE and all. But I think hte perception has changed in Dallas, where over 100 people have been exposed, thanks to this guys and his family.

And that is just the people that we know or are being told about.

The family sent their child to school after being told they were quarentined. Crazy.

I also think it's funny that the liberals, the great defenders of the poor, are the first ones on here to poo poo this away. Because if a worst case scenerio happens in the US, it isn't the affluent or even middle class that will be the most affected, it will be the lower class.

But they REALLY care about the poor people (as long as they stay in their neighborhoods, stay poor, keep voting democrat, and require no personal contact).

I'll probably end up as a fatality on your ledger at some point. a little bit of me dies every time I read one of your posts where you've clearly missed the point.

this wasn't meant as a commentary on texting while driving...I do it all the damn time, too...instead, you've just enhanced the point I was making as everything you listed above is FAR more likely to kill you than ebola. my current location has nothing to do with it.

and I still prefer my trusty road atlas to a gps, thank you.

also...when you type "cbl" into your phone, does it trigger the memory and the auto-correct capitalizes it for you? that's really flattering.

One of the scariest things to come out of this Ebola crisis is the further downfall of how information is spread and how the general public gets this information. The only thing spreading faster than a virus is misinformation.

The race for news agencies to get the story out first instead of accurate, social media and the ease of hitting "share" and the general dumbing down of society.

Who knows what the truth is anymore.

We're all screwed.....

Short of what this going airborne, what is the misinformation out there? That there is nothing to worry about seems like the biggest misinformation.

Cleanup delayed

Duncan was in Dallas visiting his son and his son's mother, his half-brother, Wilfred Smallwood, said.

Duncan's partner, who asked to be referred to only by her first name, Louise, along with her son and two nephews in their 20s, are in isolation at the apartment, which still has the sheets, clothes and towels Duncan used.

A plan to sanitize the apartment was delayed late Thursday.

Brad Smith of the Cleaning Guys, which was hired to sanitize the apartment, said his company is ready to go but a permit issue has stopped them from entering the home. Smith says a specialized permit, which is handled by the state government, is needed to transport this type of unprecedented hazardous waste on Texas highways. Cleaning Guys specializes in hazmat and biohazard cleaning services, but it does not transport the materials.

Ebola can spread through contact with an infected person's bodily fluids like blood, feces or vomit. CDC spokeswoman Abbigail Tumpey says the CDC considers materials contaminated with Ebola as regular medical waste, and as such, can be disposed of as medical waste. But she said the Department of Transportation considers Ebola to be a Category A agent, which means it's illegal to transport.

"The CDC and the DOT regulations have been in conflict. It's been an ongoing issue that we've been dealing with. We hope to have a resolution on that literally today."

"This is a unique situation," Smith said. "Once awarded, our hazmat teams will be allowed back inside to do their jobs."

Louise told CNN's Anderson Cooper that she used bleach to clean her apartment, "but it's not clear to me how systematic the cleaning was," Cooper said.

Three Dallas County sheriff's deputies have been placed on leave after helping deliver court orders to the four family members, Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Carmen Castro said Friday.

The trio escorted a Dallas County Health and Human Services worker on Wednesday who was delivering the orders, which placed the family members inside the apartment under quarantine until October 19. Castro says the deputies' leave is precautionary for their peace of mind.

I have read up on this Virus and it is beyond bad. And we are not doing much to contain it see above.

Meh... Back during the Spanish Flu epidemic, people took coal oil to prevent it. People wore bags of herbs around their neck to protect against polio, and people who had Ryan White as their paperboy cancelled subscriptions because they were afraid they'd catch AIDS from newsprint.

At least useful information can get out there now. Anyone complaining about a dumbing down of society doesn't give proper weight to the historical prevalence of ignorance.

Not sure I get your humor on this?

Not humor... This was meant to be very specifically in response to a notion of nostalgia about a less-anxious or misinformed response to past disease outbreaks.

Seems untrue.

Stop texting and driving you dipshits!

No, texting and driving is not as bad as talking to someone, or dialing the radio, because the average time your eyes are off the road during texting is over six seconds. Do you know how far a car travels in sick seconds at highway speeds?

The NHTSA did a study in 2006 and concluded that texting and driving is SIX TIMES AS DANGEROUS AS DRIVING DRUNK.

I'm kinda sad I wasted this gif on a forum no one reads. Let's just all agree we can re-use gifs from this forum and we'll all just pretend they are brand new.

Ah, another fallacy.

It's the mental distraction that is the problem , as you are mentally distracted when conversing with a passenger because your mind isn't on what is in front of you, it's in the convo you are having with that person.

How many of you have been mentally distracted and blown through a red light even though your eyes were glued to the road?

This isn't a seeing problem, it's a mental distraction problem, and there are hundreds of those every time you take a drive. It's why we have accidents in the first place.
