Personally, I have begun to believe universities overthink these things. Some hires work out, others don't, no matter who advises them on the hire.

Kind of like the inexact science of recruiting, drafting, etc and so on and so forth ad infinitum....

Anyone who has never made a hiring mistake has not hired very many people! And a successful football team has far to many moving parts to simply suggest putting the right coach in place solves everything. It might, but it's unlikely. There was a study a few years back titled something like "Hitting the reset button: firing coaches to improve football teams." The actual results over the study period showed sometimes a school gets lucky but improvement - going from losing to winning - in less than 3 years happened less than 1 in 5 cases. Schools that replaced a coach of a team with a losing record still had a losing record for the next 3 years over 80% of the time.

Heck, maybe you could do it for only 25k. You said once we should hire McCarney, and voila! Overthinking? I doubt it.
