Mean Green Massacres Nicholls, 77-3

DENTON - In one of the most lopsided victories in school history, North Texas annihilated the out-manned Nicholls Colonels, 77-3, Saturday afternoon at Apogee Stadium.

The Mean Green rolled up 526 yards total offense, sacked Colonels quarterbacks a school-record 10 times, blocked two punts, scored touchdowns on interception and punt returns, and had four players record the first TDs of their careers. The margin of victory was the biggest for North Texas since an 86-point win in 1948.

"We're not as good as we looked today, we're not as bad as we looked last week," North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. "We're somewhere in between, but we definitely took big strides today.

"It was a really fun day."

Saturday also marked the first start for redshirt quarterback Dajon Williams, and what a start it was. Williams completed his first five passes of the game, recorded his first-career rushing touchdown, then tossed his first-career touchdown pass, which was also the Mean Green's first TD throw of the year. By the end of his day, which came early in the third quarter, Williams accounted for five touchdowns - two rushing and three passing - and completed 11-of-14 passes for 176 yards and rushed four times for 68 yards.

"He really came out and executed," McCarney said. "His committment and dedication have been at a different level the last couple of weeks, and it showed today."

This outcome was decided in the first 4:05 of the first quarter. In that span, the Mean Green defense registered a sack, an interception by James Jones, and a blocked punt by Derrick Teegarden, while the offense got an eight-yard touchdown run from Williams, a 41-yard pass from Williams to Carlos Harris, and a one-yard scoring run by Reggie Pegram for a 21-0 lead.
