Dajon Williams spent a whole lot of time positioned directly behind North Texas’ huddle in practice over the past few months.

Injuries and off-the-field issues kept the redshirt freshman out of the lineup and without a whole lot to do. UNT offensive coordinator Mike Canales made sure that time didn’t go to waste.

“He did a lot mentally,” Canales said. “I had him mimic everything behind the huddle on every play so that he could get the mental reps and try to get some experience. I got him in with the ones and twos [first- and second-teams] when I could.”

The time Williams spent running through UNT’s offense without actually running it suddenly looms large for the Mean Green, who will turn to the former Pflugerville Connally standout in the hope that he can spark a stagnant offense and revive optimism in a season that is dangerously close to slipping away.

UNT started the season with junior college transfer Josh Greer as its quarterback and gave career backup Andrew McNulty a shot as well.

Nothing has worked as UNT hoped it might, leaving the Mean Green facing a harsh reality heading into their game against Nicholls State on Saturday with a 1-2 record and a loss to Louisiana Tech in their Conference USA opener already in the books.
