UNT results from the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational Program, an Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned event featuring 19 different colleges:

This is a very competitive tournament and we were without our #1 player due to injury. We had a singles and doubles win over TCU and a doubles victory over Texas Tech. However, we had three doubles losses to Rice, last year's Conference USA champion. It looks like we were competitive in most of the matches, but will need to improve as the year goes on to become a conference force. The fall season events are usually individual ones, with the spring being team events. It will be interesting to see how we fare as the year goes along. Coach Lama's teams usually improve by the spring and conference tournament. Hope it is the same this year!

Singles

Anastasiya Shestakova vs. Alexis Sapegova (Penn State) won by withdrawal--moves to next round

Alexis Thoma lost to Jean Runglerdkriangkrai (Pepperdine) 8-5 moves to consolation bracket

Kamilla Galleva beat Sofiko Kadzhaya (TCU) 8-5 moves to next round

Augustina Valenzuela lost to #6 seed Dobby Ieenabanchang (Tulsa) 8-7 moves to consolation bracket

Ana Sofia Cordero vs. Danielle Feneridis (Pepperdine) won by withdrawal; then lost in second round to Emily Oliver (New Mexico) 9-8

Franzsika Sprinkmeyer lost to Kim Surin (Penn State) 6-3 and then in the consolation bracket to Lauren Pickens (Kansas) 8-6

Doubles

Galleva-Shestakova lost to #1 seed Zimmerman-Benazant (Rice) 6-4

Sprinkmeyer-Thoma beat Jackson-Czamick (Texas Tech) 6-4; then lost to Durkin-Zinko (Rice) 6-3

Cordova-Valenzuela beat Kadzhaya-Dubavets (TCU) 7-6; then lost to #8 seed Hodge-Ho (Rice) 6-2

Rice was the Conference USA Champion last year and looks strong again this year

Still have 4 singles entries, 2 on the regular draw an 2 in the consolation bracket

No consolation bracket for doubles

sure hope Coach Lama intends to bring in a player in January, that can play Top 3.

Rice is super strong and had a great recruiting class.

Tulsa is gone at least

Louisiana Tech will be stout, Marshall is always solid.

Old Dominion signed a Bulgarian who is 400 in the world

Can't complain I guess since the current team is probably going to be Top 3, but won't be anywhere close to Rice again, rumor was the Rice Coach was offered the UT Women's job and turned it down.

Lama will need a strong January signee to make even a dent against Rice:

Shestakova will need better results at 2/3 tournaments not promising with a bad loss to K State player who was at McNeese last year.

A bad doubles loss to ACU and Denver, at this point those are matches that need to be won in order to move up into the Top 40

Missing our #1 singles player and doubles team due to injury didn't help. I agree we need another strong top player to have a chance against Rice. Hoping we don't get into the same bracket in the conference tournament, but that will mean doing well enough to be seeded 2nd. It should be interesting to see how we fare in the ITA Regional Tournament next month.
