Well, I was glad to have four guests last night for our watch party. We had two attorneys (one went to UNT, the other to Nebraska) who are married to each other along with one set of their parents (dad went to UNT and is now an exec for Amex). We used the scoreless first quarter as a chance to brag about the SMU game and the awesome new Apogee stadium, as well as some of the other new and exciting things going on at North Texas.

Everyone left after the 3rd quarter. These are the kinds of alumni that everyone complains we don't have enough involvement with. So tell me, exactly how can I expect to get them to come to another one of these, and maybe eventually slip them scholarship and MGC information to read over, if telling them about the exciting direction we're going is exemplified by an embarrassment like the one from last night? The elder alum is fairly disconnected and has had decades to get involved. The younger one was talking about making a trip to Apogee for a game, but also spoke of possibly buying/joining the waiting list for Nebraska season tickets since his wife went there and they make occasional trips back. Which do you think they're more likely to do after last night?

Football isn't everything, but if we're using as it should be - as a recruitment and retention tool for students and alumni - then it's reasonable to assume that we may miss out on a lot of opportunities if that recruitment and retention tool is proven to be impotent.

I honestly think that I probably should hold off on holding any more of these for now. If Mac has a point to prove with players, fine. But until that point is proven and this product is one worth showing off again, using it as a gathering point could prove counterproductive and might drive people back away again instead of drawing them closer. I'll stay dedicated, but I'd rather hold off on my efforts instead of having them backfire and have the opposite effect than is desired. Those of us already committed are one thing, but it's hard to get new commitments when your alma mater is being embarrassed on national television. The bodybag games at P5 schools are bad enough, but when this happens against a mediocre team at our own stadium, it's just plain ridiculous.

On a mildly related note, if this keeps up I'm also worried about us holding on to Skladany. If he knows his defense is going to be put through the wringer every week because the guy who should be playing isn't standing up to Mac's scrutiny, he may not stick around as long as we'd like, wouldn't you think? The offense having 45 second drives causing his defense to get exhausted and sloppy reflects poorly on him, even though it shouldn't.

Sorry to hear that happened. I'm sure yours isn't the only case.

I'm not worried about the Skladany issue, though. He loves and respects Coach Mac. If he leaves it will be because he had an offer he can't pass up or he is ready to retire.

If Skladany leaves it'll be for retirement. McCarney has hinted enough that Skladany is nearing retirement.

I too had two new faces visiting Apogee for the very first time. They had a great time but geesh it was gruesome. Further my friends across the land didn't see the game but they saw the score and many said, "What happened last night?"

1. Tailgate fun - wish there were more fans out there early but the stands looked better than 16k.

2. Game - rough but still gonna support the guys.

Big picture check: If we do it right next weekend we end September 2-2 - a third of the way to bowl eligibility.

If they are only going to come back or support when the team wins, doesn't matter cause they won't stay around long anyway.

You're missing the point. We're trying to DRAW people in. I mentioned that...once you're committed, you stick through thick and thin. But you can't pull people in by saying, "Hey, look at this crappy and embarrassing game. Wanna join the Mean Green Club?"

The message from the two first timers I brought last night, "We had a great time !!! I think we will be calling the ticket office!" Oh, these two are huge Nebraska fans and have nothing tying them to North Texas. Maybe you guys are doing it wrong.

Yeah, if I was doing it right I'd actually be taking people to games and not having watch parties, but since I can't afford $3K+ per week to fly people there, I don't get the opportunity to show off the tailgating and the new stadium.
