Ashamed to be Mean Green (And not why you think)

Like most of you, i've thought about this game a lot. I, like everyone think we have to at least try starting Dajon before we have to burn a red shirt or destroy all hopes of hitting six. That being said, I wanted to point out a fucking terrible point in this game where i was ashamed to be supporting UNT. This moment had nothing to do with play on the field.

I sit in the young alumni section and i never leave early. I heckle, pick on opposing players all that ra-ra shit. But I was ashamed during the late third quarter where other young alumni began asking the LaTech defense to hurt Greer. I do mean physically take him out of the game. This continued until mid-fourth quarter where they stumbled away drunkenly. They are typically loud, they are rowdy, and all seemingly graduated from the same fraternity. I am totally okay with those traits most of the time. But whoever it is, that's despicable. That's not only a member of your university, and someone you claim to support, that's a kid, with parents and a future.

If this is how we respond to losing, it's not a fan base i choose to be a part of. My years of fandom and sports writing were 09-13 (Pre 2013 football season). I'd rather have all of those seasons over again than be associated with that shit.

Did you ever stop and think they are seriously frustrated? If you follow other fans they are exactly the same as ours. Hell, SMU has folks screaming to end the program after 2 losses. People get that he is someone's kid. But that kid is failing and can't cut it. It's football. People like the violence and those players do too. That's why they play. Our fans are pretty tame compared to most.

I am of the opinion that Greer isn't ready THIS SEASON to help us. Who knows how the future will play out? The coaches love him, keep him on scholarship and see if it clicks for him later. I just want to given someone else, namely DW, a shot.

I would never wish for someone to get hurt, and I think it's pretty low of anyone to do so.

That is really unfortunate. We were all in various states of disapproval last night, but calling out the opposing team to physically injure one of your own is something I don't think I've ever even heard of. I hope we haven't created a monster with the combination of this young alumni section and beer sales.

On the bright side, I heard a couple people talking at the stadium last night saying, "Dude, It's haard to get into the student section now."

So unless last night's debacle drove them away for another year (I fear it did), great things are happening on that side of the stadium overall.

I was seriously frustrated, but unlike that group of individuals, i was thinking, you know, with my brain. I have never and will never live my life in a way that I do things "because others do it". I'm fine with intensity, big hits, whatever. I quit other sports to focus on football for a reason. But that's classless in my opinion. Maybe if you get "too frustrated" you shouldn't put your yourself in an environment you couldn't handle with you big boy emotions.

It's immaturity at it's finest combined with alcohol. I'm in my 40's now & I think we've all seen what alcohol can do to adults too. It's embarrassing this stuff happens, but it happens pretty much everywhere. Hopefully the opposing players/fans understand that, but that doesn't make it ok.

I also sit in that section, and I haven't seen anything but poorly executed heckling. I've seen nothing like you described. That's shameful that someone said those things, but this kind of behavior is going to happen in isolated incidents with any fanbase.

i was sitting around a couple of people who kept yelling at/about how bad Greer sucks... that in itself is not acceptable to me... this kid is in his first year of D-1 Football, he has never proved anything on this level for us to complain about him not working hard enough or slacking off

he's trying his best... it's not his fault that either:

A.) he is the best option

or

B.) Coach Mac refuses to play Dajon

Man, I couldn't agree more. We were in section 120, row 3 and the students behind us and some alumni in front of us were not only crossing the line, but were just plain wrong. They were incredibly ignorant to the game and couldn't be more distant from an acceptable understanding of football. It was pretty sad... I spent a lot of time heckling (especially in the basketball band) and I always made sure to never cross the line. I just don't understand where the ridiculousness comes from.

The guys behind us in the young alumni section were escorted out of the game by two UNT police officers....without warning and for doing absolutely nothing wrong. The main officer's first words to all of us was, "who's sober here!?" Then, "you, come with me!," as he pointed to a guy who kept to himself the entire game and did nothing wrong. Him and his friend were taken for a "talking-to" and I didn't see them again.

Were cuss words yelled? Yes. Were lines crossed? Probably. But no warning? No verification of the actual person they were most likely told to address? It might be a little dramatic, but it seriously seemed like something out of some Central American civil war (you know what I mean). No warning, no identification, no reason, just a swift escort out of the game by an officer who addressed the situation terribly. Jesus, it's a football game. A game where cussing and violence are staples.

No, I don't like when and if lines are crossed. And I definitely don't like people yelling negative things about our players. But regardless, those people were there because they actually give a S*** about this school and program, not to mention the hard earned money they paid. If they offended someone, it could have been handled a million times better. If you don't like what someone is yelling or if you are just emotionally fragile, is it to hard to politely ask that person to stop?

To those on your "you see what Alcohol does" high horse...that is complete and utter BS. Heckling and/or yelling out of line happens everywhere. It happened at Fouts. It happens at Apogee. It happens at Austin freaking College.

We sit near people like this EVERY game. Drives my husband and brother nuts. My mom usually ends up friends with them.

I sat with my young son and listened to one of our fans cuss and rant about every flag thrown. I finally turned around and pointed out that i had a youngster with me. He apologized and was very nice the rest of the game. Most people get too caught up in their emotions and don't realize how they come across.

The very first game I ever went to, I was 36 years old. My kid was 7. I had the free student ticket, so I unwittingly took my small child into the student section. That lasted about three minutes. We spent the rest of that game in the endzone, sucking down frozen lemonade.

I still don't hold any animosity for that. I really should've known better.
