Cedar Hill is a must-stop for college football recruiters.

Over Joey McGuires decade-long tenure at the school, Cedar Hill has placed players in some of the nations best programs. This year alone, the school has seniors pledged to LSU, Texas A&M, USC and Tennessee.

SMU the closest FBS program, less than 25 miles away should be a fixture on McGuires campus, right?

Apart from an uptick over the past few years, not so much, McGuire said. Rice, Houston, UT-San Antonio and Texas State all worked his school harder. UTEP did as well, until this year.

I thought this last year, [sMU] did a great job recruiting us their linebackers coach [Eric Daniels] was at every practice he could be at, and their DC [Tom Mason] came to watch our scrimmage, McGuire said. It just that if I was in those college shoes, if Im in the metroplex/Denton/Allen area, if Im not trying to get every kid I can out of there, I dont feel like Id be doing a good enough job.

June Jones resignation on Monday as SMUs head coach was surprising, just two games into the 2014 season. Perhaps as surprising, though, was Jones recruiting strategy during his time on the Hilltop.

Cedar Hill coach doesn't mention UNT as being a frequent visitor to their school. Interesting.

I'm fine with that. So many schools recruit Cedar Hill that it's hard for good players to slip through the cracks and fall to us. It's possible, as evidenced by guys like Brandon Akpunku and James Hamilton, but they were able to fall to us because their junior year CH had one of the most loaded teams in state history. As a result, Akpunku and Hamilton didn't start until their senior year.

Plus, these kids have high aspirations. They see their teammates signing with the LSUs and Texas type teams, so they want to sign with the big name as well. Same with DeSoto. All this talk about our DeSoto recruits, we have only landed 2 in the past 4 classes and both didn't have any other offers.

I'm not saying don't recruit schools like DeSoto and Cedar Hill at all. But you can't just recruit kids just because they're from those schools. I'd rather get a kid like Jeffery Wilson from tiny Elkhart, Texas. If Jeffery Wilson played for CH or DeSoto he would likely be signed off to and playing at a Big 12 school.

I don't see anything wrong with recruiting out of state, get players wherever you can.

Being SMU just got shellacked by a team they have pretty much owned in recruiting, there is a lot bigger problem at SMU than where they recruit.
