In an ambitious blitz of new products, Apple Inc. AAPL +0.04% unveiled a pair of larger-screen iPhones, an Internet-connected watch and a new payment system that allows users to make store purchases with a smart device.

The watch, called Apple Watch, represents the company's first new product in more than four years. Apple said the watch will start at $349 and be available in early 2015. It works through a connection to Apple's new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as well as the older iPhone 5, 5c and 5s.

The device comes in two sizes and three versions: Watch, Sport and Edition. Apple is offering several different straps and faces, allowing multiple designs.

Apple has a tough road ahead on the watch. $349 is a lot more than the competition. Samsung, Motorola, and LG are around $200 for the base model and $300 for the high end one. If you are looking for something that works with the iPhone, the Pebble runs $150 and $250. For the extra money, it just doesn't seem that you get anything that hasn't already been done besides the little wheel on the side and the Apple logo. The latter of those two will sell some units, but I just don't know that they will have the runaway success with this one that they had with other products.

This guy, and the myriads of others like him beg to differ. They'll pay whatever for a hip new Apple product and new skinny jeans.

That is what I meant when I said that the logo would make some sales, but for true mass market appeal, they are going to have some trouble when sitting on the shelf next to a Pebble that can be had for $100-200 less. The Samsung and company prices won't have as much impact on Apple sales as they don't work with iOS, but could lead to customers thinking that Apple is ripping them off. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

So I have to have an iPhone to have an iWatch? And I have to wear something on my wrist? That's probably not very water proof and will short out the first hot summer Texas day that I sweat all over it?

I'm not buying into Google Glass, and I'm sure as hell not buying into the Dick Tracey look.

Have fun, hipsters.
