Does UNT have any process where it routinely checks with its student athletes to see if they have gotton in over their heads financially? Getting them the food they need, medicines, etc. if they have mismanaged their accounts?

This has nothing to do with money.

This case is probably more to blame on being a stupid college kid that thinks he won't get caught and hasn't really considered the ramifications of getting caught. A lot like drunk driving.

Another problem is that some athletes begin to think they are above the crowd, having gotten special treatment for most of their lives. Not necessarily the case here, but it happens.

Oh, and regarding money, just wait until the "echelon" players start getting paid extra stipends. This is only going to increase the entitlement attitudes.

Did he play against Texas?

"The former Eastern Arizona Community College standout had not practiced or played for the Mean Green this season due to a career-ending knee injury. Brown was on UNT’s roster until Friday afternoon."

Why isn't Vito asking the hard questions: What did this particular WalMart do to piss off the football team?!

All joking aside, I hope he is able to complete his education. Yes, this is a stupid mistake and he deserves to pay for it, but it is in no way enough to strip his future from him.
