Everything says this game should be a rivalry.

The schools are separated by 30 miles, give or take. They both compete for the same recruits, for the same TV market, for the same respect given to Texas, Texas A&M and now Baylor in the Dallas-Fort Worth Market.

A 9-4 North Texas team in 2013 was paraded around the Metroplex just like the 2009 SMU, which finished 8-5 and went to their first bowl game in twenty years. In both cases, adoration of both teams was usurped by attention focused on their bigger brothers, Baylor in 2013 (and Johnny Football), and Texas in 2009.

Both schools have enjoyed prominent periods in their football histories- North Texas in the 1960's, 1970's, and early 2000's, and SMU in the 1960's and 1980's, and both fell on down times as well.

IT IS A RIVALRY NOW. THE GAME IMBALANCE IS DUE TO THE ONES PLAYED DECADES AGO. 2-2 SINCE1990. If we can't get sky high for this game, we are dead as a D-1 program. Will have to depend heavily on student draw as townsfolk are too ignorant to understand the importance of this game!!!

When you're down, what's the the easiest way to make yourself feel better? Bringing up past accomplishments works for cowboys fans, so of course SMU folks are going to do the same. Personally I think it will be even sweeter when we smoke this team who doesn't even think we are good enough to be their "rival". It will only take a few beat downs before some of them break free from their delusions. Others will never break free because that's how they roll

Then status quo is maintained and life goes on. My point is a loss is going to hurt the pride of those SMU fans with narcissistic tendencies far more than it will hurt most of us.

Good point

I think this loss hurts us more than them.

I do too... and we've seen that displayed from our friend malonish.

For us, a loss to SMU would almost certainly mean we're not capitalizing on our 2013 & HOD Bowl momentum.

For SMU, and how they view us, a loss to UNT would be a catalyst for a much-needed coaching change.

I think June Jones gets fired if he loses this game--at least at some point this season. If we lose, I don't think it will be too much different around here. Basically, it will look like every year in Denton since 2005, except for last season. We will have started off the year getting pounded by AQ powerhouse or we will have lost the first home game played against a team that people care something about, meaning that about half the people won't see Apogee again all season long.

2005--crushed by Tulsa at home, followed by a pounding at K-State

2006--crushed at Texas, actually beat SMU at home, but then fell apart later, getting Dickey fired

2007--crushed at OU, lost at SMU, crushed at Arky

2008--crushed at K-State, crushed at home against Tulsa, crushed at LSU, prison-raped at freaking Rice (btw, this has to be the least competitive team UNT has ever fielded--we lost 11 games by an average of 31 pts.)

2009--opened with a win at Ball State, lost home opener against Ohio, crushed by Bama

2010--crushed at Clemson, lost at home to Rice

2011--crushed at FIU, pounded at home against UH, crushed by Bama

2012--crushed at LSU, lose at K-State, then follow it up with loss at home to Troy

2014--crushed at Texas, ??? at home versus SMU

We are going to win this game in pretty convincing fashion.

Ha, I was going to laugh if this list wasn't so sad. Imagine how I felt. I moved onto campus in 2008.

I think we will, too, but my point is that if we don't, its not like the program is about to be shutdown, as DallasGreen is basically suggesting...

SMU RB Prescott Line

Since that's a person, I believe the question would have been "Who's the Line?" - but I guess that just shows your overpriced SMU education.
