Baylor's 3rd String QB

Why is Baylor's 3rd string QB better than all of our QB's combined?? His name is Chris Johnson. He's a redshirt freshman coming out of College Station. He is listed at 6'5" 225lb and going just by off the last play a game where he ran a zone-read keeper he has at least high 4.6 speed. He was rated a 3 star by rivals. He was the number 428 overall recruit coming out of high school. A guy like this is who we need to go after. How and why are these schools stock piling these QB's?!?! And this is their 3rd stringer. He could come to North Texas and do wonders at a place like Denton. Now he is going to be buried in the depth chart for the remainder of his career, because Bryce Petty's back up is legit and is only a sophomore. It baffles me that these P5's are stock piling legitimate talent at the QB position that will get buried in the depth and we can't seem to get anyone to come here. And this is just Baylor, I am sure that a lot of rosters are very similar.

I understand the logic of a 17-18 year old senior in high school. But the bottom line is this...if you don't play you will never be seen. Guys are drafted and picked up in FA out of CUSA, MW, MAC and even the SBC every single year. They can believe in themselves all they want, but the athlete and their families need to sit down and realistically go over the entirety of their options. That 2 minute garbage time of playing time might be his only playing time of maybe his career. It's a shame too. With that frame and skill level he could come to North Texas and throw for 3000 yards a year for 3 years and be seen by scouts. In the meantime he will sit there on the bench in Waco preparing to do whatever it is he ends up doing. This is our biggest advantage to keep this autonomy at bay and it needs to be taken advantage of. We have to sway this kids with playing time, of course the ones that are worthy of immediate/early playing time. This dude is literally better than every QB on our roster, hands down. And I don't say that trying to be an asshole, he really is. GMG

Dang, we need to play us one of them 3rd stringers. Just to be clear, I would have liked to see our 3rd string QB Saturday night, but am still not sure who that is. Oh, and the one thing I admired about June Jones was that he was willing to try out several quarterbacks. I'm still not convinced it helped much, but couldn't really hurt much either.

SMU's 3rd stringer looked good as well.

SMU's 3rd stringer looked decent. Played with a pair between his legs. But Baylor's 3rd stringer looked legit. As in if he came here we would have made the game last night one hell of a game then have a good shot of running the table. But these recruits don't want to be the spoiler of some P5 and a mid-major conference champion. They want the glory of saying.."I signed major D1." Then some of them go sit on the bench for 4 years, if they last that long.

It’s going to get harder and harder to recruit a “legit” QB’s to UNT in my opinion if we continue with the “we don’t need them to be the reason we win, just play steady and don’t make mistakes”. I just find it hard to believe that most 17/18 year olds who have probably always been the “Alpha” players on their teams want to come to a situation where they are now being told they just need to do their part.

If I was a 6'5" QB with what this guy has I would want to play. Playing at Baylor for him is not playing. Playing at Baylor for him is getting buried in depth to watch from the bench. Recruits need to know this. Especially recruits like this.

Absolutely, the mindset SHOULD be to go somewhere where you can get on the field and play. However, just calling it like it is, but our system isn't going to attract kids over those after mentioned places which completely feature the QB. These kids want to be on ESPN, and rack up numbers.

These kids think they're good enough to supplant someone on the depth chart. Prestige is a huge factor, too. I can go to Baylor, I think I'm good enough to beat out So&So, play in a dynamic spread, and play in a P5 conference or I can go to UNT and probably start in a run happy offense at a mid major. Choice is pretty obvious I think...

You don't become a top HS athlete by lacking confidence. Every single one of these kids think they could go to the top programs and become a starter. Every single player at UNT thinks they could go to any program and become a starter, that's just the mindset you need to even become a college prospect.

He's a redshirt freshman. Bryce Petty is a senior. If this kid is consistently good then he has a great shot at being their starting qb next season when they're looking for a replacement for Petty in the spring. Because their current backup didn't look great.

Johnson will be a sophomore next season. That would give him three seasons as a starter in that Baylor offense. That would be playing, at Baylor.

As for Petty, he sat the bench for 4 seasons before becoming the starter. Technically 3, but 4 when you think about it. Graduated high school in 09, grayshirted that season, redshirted in 2010, was third string in 2011, was a backup in 2012, and then became a starter last year in 2013.

Bryce Petty's backup will be the starter. He is really good. He is a sophomore and has the next 2 years at Baylor locked up. Then Chris Johnson will have to worry about Baylor bringing in a freak recruit. I am not just referring to Chris Johnson..I am referring to guys like Chris Johnson. Going somewhere playing QB and getting buried in depth for the entirety of their career. Because this isn't just Baylor, it' s a ton of P5 schools stockpiling really good QB's.

Didn't look that great to me. And his stats weren't great either. 13-23, 124 yards, 1 td:1 int, and a very underwhelming 5.4 yards/attempt. If Johnson is the real deal he should beat Russell out.

If I had to guess looking from a glance I'd say Russell is the backup because he's older and he knows the offense well. But Johnson is more likely to be the big play qb Briles wants in his high-octane offense.

Point is, if a qb is good enough to be the only quarterback taken in his class at a P5 school then that's what matters most to them. They will have a chance to win a starting job at some point. Whether or not they win it is a different story, but you're not going to convince these kids to go to North Texas over a school like Baylor if they could be the only qb taken in either class. Not right now.

He will get his turn to be the man his JR year then be a heisman candidate..... Why would he trade that just to play 4 years at north texas, take your green glasses off and think for two seconds. Good lord.

They're the same age, RS Frosh and true sophomore. Oh and starting a statement "if I had to guess" is hardly factual. Again, not referring exactly to Chris Johnson, just players in a similar situation.

And no, he'll get his shot his RS Sr year, and that's if Baylor doesn't pick up a freak at QB from now to then.

They're not the same age. Russell is a redshirt sophomore, not a true sophomore. So he's a year older/grade above Johnson, a redshirt freshman.

Not going to continue to argue with you about Baylor's qb situation. But Briles plays qbs who can take over games and put up huge numbers. Russell didn't look like that guy. Johnson looked like he has more of that ability. Russell looked like a game manager judging by his play and the playcalling they had with him in. I don't see Briles starting a game manager. He just hasn't in the past.

Anyways, he has a chance to beat out Russell and be a 3-year starter at Baylor. It is completely realistic and in his control. North Texas can't make a good enough pitch to beat that out right now. And the qbs they sign after a guy like Johnson aren't going to affect that. You can't say "come here because you aren't going to beat out the guys they're going to sign after you." It's just not how recruiting works. And they do already have studs locked up for 2015 and 2016.

They're the same age, just so you know. And I agree with most things you said. Russell is good though and will be the 2015 starter. He has a rocket arm and decent legs. He may of looked rusty last night, but how much PT has he really had..not much.

Your link has the roster. Click on Russell's profile. It says 3rd year (redshirt) sophomore. He graduated high school and signed with Baylor in 2012. Johnson graduated high school and signed with Baylor in 2013.

You may be the best person I've ever seen at continuing to argue when there is undeniable proof that you are wrong. Unless you're talking about their actual age, which has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation. Like grade classification does.
