Key questions for Texas game– Can UNT’s defensive line hold?

We are getting closer and closer to UNT’s opener at Texas in a couple of weeks. While we sit and wait for UNT to officially announce its starting quarterback, let’s look at one of the key matchups when it comes to the Mean Green’s opener.

There might not be a bigger challenge for UNT than having its defensive line hold up.

Let’s look at the lineups:

Center – Dominic Espinosa, 6-2, 308

Guard — Sedrick Flowers, 6-3, 320

Guard Taylor Doyle, 6-5, 300

Tackle — Kent Perkins, 6-5, 330

They will be bigger, however I think we can use our quickness to our advantage. This is one of the fastest North Texas teams we have had. It will be interesting to see how we fare against their speed which is tops in the nation.

Being faster may bode well for pass rushing around an O-line pocket, but when the O-line is pushing, the lack of size is not good.

I haven't seen our defense since spring, so I don't know how any new players (freshman/late walk-ons etc) have improved the overall group. But overall, the impression that I came away with in the spring was that our defense was as fast, if not faster, than I've ever observed.

Faster and more depth. Defensive players will be able to rotate without a lot of drop off from starter to backup.

Plus our OL is bigger and better, so our DL will have had lots of meaningful practice that should translate well.

Speed is best combatant against size, put a quicker guy there who can get off the ball and in a gap before that road grader can get there. We will see
