Quarterback Question

From everything I have been reading, it sounds like the starting QB job is basically between McNulty and Greer. Is Williams even in the hunt to win the starting job? Coming out of camp last year, it sounded like the coaches were very high on Williams and that he even pushed for significant playing time as a true freshman. As a secondary question, was Williams granted a redshirt for last season? I know he played a limited amount. No matter who the coaches name as the starter, I have complete faith that Mac & Co. will make the right decision. August 30th can't get here soon enough.

Just a theory...Mac wanted to give dajon a look last year. Im not sure chico was 100% on board.

Dajon is an athlete trying to play qb, just like Brock was.

Chico wants a smart qb. One that will run to keep defenses honest, but not as a main strength. He doesnt want someone improvising. Dajon looked good at first with a scaled down offense. Once chico added stuff, it was too much for him. Chico is a system guy. The play calling and system wins the game. Chico needs a smart qb to understand the different personell, formations, and tweaks that can pop up at any time.

Mac wants a running qb. Sage rosenfels and Seneca Wallace were average passers, but they were above average runners with 8-10 tds. Thier td/int ratio at Iowa state was similar to DT. He also watched tebo while at Florida.

To me, it seems like the athlete at qb idea has been scrapped. chico went after means and brought in Greer. Even the targets we are recruiting seems to indicate it. Dajon has to learn how to play within the system, or get left out. Being a great athlete will not be enough. And since we went 9-4 with DT, if it aint broke, then why fix it.

I'm kinda leaning this way as well. I think the QB's are Chico's. McCarney might want to see Williams, but if Chico doesn't trust him, like Berglund, he ain't playing.

Williams may be the best athlete out there, but if he isn't ready as a RS frosh then why rush him? I have a great amount of trust in our coaching staff and to me I am going to think that they see something that we don't. Also, If McNulty does get the starting nod then Williams will still have time after Mini Mc graduates to start which gives him time to learn the system now. McNulty knows whats what in this system, Williams doesn't seem to, yet. Give him time he has plenty.

So you say Macs QB's at IA ST had 8-10 rushing td's, but the same ratio passing the ball as DT (Chico's style) then I say go with Mac. 9-4 isn't an implication of "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Especially when Chico's QB squandered away what should have been 2 wins. With that said go with the best option to win regardless of style. If the O has to be dumbed down for Dajon for us to win, dumb it down. If Chico is confident that his system with his style of QB can win as much then go with that style. Just win and GMG!

Mac wants a safe qb. One that will run to keep defenses honest, but not as a main strength. He doesnt want someone improvising. Dajon looked good at first with a scaled down offense. Once chico added stuff, Dajon began improvising and not protecting the ball. Mac is a defense first guy. The defense wins the game. Mac needs a smart qb to understand that turnovers are not an option.

To me, it seems like the athlete at qb idea has been scrapped if they turn the ball over. chico went after means and brought in Greer. Even the targets we are recruiting seems to indicate it. I don't know if you have any inside information to back this up but from the outside (and from considering Mac's history) I think you may have it figured out. It makes a lot of sense. McNulty might not be Mac's guy but instead he might be Chico's guy.

If chico wanted dajon to be the guy, the offensive game plan would have reflected it. It would have been tweaked for his skill set.

Some on here need to pay attention at the games, camps, scrimmages, practices etc when it comes to Mac's role in the offense. He's not designing the offense and calling the plays. Not even close.

And that is how it with most defensive minded coaches in high school, college, and probably pro.

Even if they want a conservative game plan, the OC still can be creative and has options for how it can be achieved.

Technically, he received a hardship waiver, as he was not eligible for a standard redshirt. But that classifies him as a "redshirt freshman" this year, regardless.

I don't think you can apply for a medical hardship waiver until you have completed all four years of eligibility.

ETA: Since the hardship wavers come from the conference, and not the NCAA, I guess they feel comfortable enough to list him as a RS.

And I would refer you to watch the last 3 games of the 2010 season when Chico was both head coach and OC.

Do that and them get back with me if you still believe Mac is completely hands off with this offense.

Oh, and remember, those players were slow and out shape, being those were the pre-Mac years and all.

Mac and skladany definetly have restrictions, but it's chicos show as far as playcalling, personell, recruiting.

The run, run, pass is Mac and skladany. I know when skladany was at UH, he hated the offense. Not so much that he is old school, but the effect it had on his defense.

A quick 3 and out, and your undersized defense with little depth is back on the field. Im sure chico can only run hurry up in certain situations too. Chico has limitations no doubt, but most OCs have to work around a defensive head coach's game plan.

Like I said in another thread. What we had last year was a bad compromise of two philosophies.

I didnt look at the games but the boxscores of the last 3 games that chico coached were not some high flying offense.

Muts was a win 23-17. Dunbar rushed for 226. Dodge threw for 167.

Ulm loss. 49-37. Dodge threw for 164 on 26 attempts.

Kstate loss. 49-41. Dunbar rushed for 269. Dodge and Blaine had 20 attempts. 161 yards.

Chico didn't call those games. The OC was the guy from La Tech I believe. And if I recall there were quite a few people on this board at the time that made reference to how much better we played with that guy calling the games rather than Chico.
