"Former Ryan standout J.T. Williams is no longer at Southern Miss.

Williams and the university confirmed the defensive tackle’s departure from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. A spokesperson for the Southern Miss athletic department said Williams left the team voluntarily and did not violate team rules.

A slim shot at playing time and the distance from Denton played big roles in Williams’ decision to head home.

“I stuck it out for the whole summer and things still didn’t look good,” Williams said. “I wasn’t liking it down there.”

The former Ryan defensive tackle had 67 tackles last season, with nine of those coming behind the line of scrimmage. He also had five sacks and two forced fumbles.

Williams said he sat down with the Golden Eagles’ coaching staff, which wanted the Ryan graduate to redshirt his freshman year, something that didn’t sit well with Williams."

Wouldn't he have to sit out 2 seasons if he came to NT, since S Miss is in the same conference?

hit the nail right on the head. If he just would have committed to us in the first place he wouldn't have to go through this. Can't believe he would pick So. Miss over us with the shellacking we gave them in The Rock. I did read that his options had dwindled down to USM, Houston Baptist and Mass so I wonder if we pulled the offer after filling the need.

Yeah, it seemed like we weren't actively recruiting him at the end there.

Also, another thing to note. I believe that he would only have to spend one season at the junior college, as opposed to the more traditional two seasons. This is because he qualified out of high school and did not go JUCO because of being a non qualifier. But we'll see if we even recruit him. Seems like he'd consider us.
