Prior to Lamar, Barbay spent two years as the athletics director and head coach at Warren (Texas) High School. On the collegiate level, the native of Nederland, Texas, was a graduate assistant at Baylor from the fall of 2006 to the summer of 2007, before accepting his first full-time coaching job at Texas A&M-Commerce. He spent two seasons as the Lions as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach before taking the tight ends coach position at the University of North Texas in 2009.
