Saw T.M. play today in summer league game vs. Houston. Isaiah Thomas was commentator, said that the Pistons were playing him inside, and that he thought his natural position would be on the perimeter.Thoughts?

Watched too. He was a terrible coach , but I agree with just about everything Thomas said. Tony won't be successful in the league if he's forced to play the 4 position. He's greatest attribute is his athleticism and playing the 3 fits to his strengths. His ball handing does need some work , but I think he could find a nice role on a NBA roster as a 3. Would probably be in Tony's best interest if he was moved positions or waived/traded IMO.

Had 13 points & 3 rebounds in limited action. He did get into some foul trouble ( although I don't think you can actually foul out in summer league)

Plays again today @ 2pm.

The mavericks need a 3...

Isiah stated that he had followed Tony since high school where he displayed great ball handling skills; while playing on the perimeter.

He went on to say that Tony's size and skill sets at the 3 provided him an advantage that he loses at the 4 in the NBA. He never mentioned North Texas but felt that the personnel of the Pistons/NBA projecting him at the 4 (with his back to the basket) is not playing to his strengths. I've followed Tony since the 9th grade. I think Isiah nailed it. Not saying moving him to the 3 will solve all his issues but provides him with a more suitable opportunity for success long term. Tony is not the player he was in high school at the 4.

Completely disagree, Tony is not a good ball handler and his biggest asset is his quick jump. Obviously, Tony has not shown the temperament to be an effective inside player; but I think that is best chance in the pros. Most pro threes are better making their own shots and hitting them than Mitchell. While, he is not a giant; his biggest gift is his ability to jump.

Most guys won't do it, but if he focused on it, I feel he could pull down 12+ boards a night if he made rebounding his #1 priority.

Otherwise he may need another year or two of intense work on shooting and ball handling if he is intent on finding an offensive role.

I've watched every Summer Leagues game that Tony has been a part of and I can say without a doubt that the Pistons have to be the worst coached team in the NBA. Why they have TM as a 5 is beyond me. I hope they let him go after next season and the Mavs pick him up. It takes a great coach to bring out the best in players.
