Based on our 2014-2015 roster on MGS:

DE:

Tillman Johnson, FR, 6-1, 243

Andy Flusche, RS FR, 6-3, 230

Malik Donga, RS SO, 6-4, 251

Jarrian Roberts , RS SO, 6-2, 238

Chad Polk, JR, 6-0, 223

Quenton Brown, SR, 6-4, 235

Daryl Mason, SR, 6-3, 253

DT:

TJ Tauaalo, FR, 6-2, 288

Sid Moore, RS FR, 6-1, 252

Mustafa Haboul, RS SO, 6-0, 253

Sir Calvin Wallace, RS SO, 6-2, 293

Dutton Watson, RS SO, 6-3, 273

Joe Kaho, JR, 5-10, 255

Austin Orr, JR, 6-4 272

Alexander Lincoln, SR, 6-2, 267

If nothing else, Coach Mac has increased the numbers at DT. Now we just need some guys to step up.

Keep in mind McDorman gave up football, Kottman was not released from scholly and the high ranked recruit that left for Navarro.

I thought about putting an asterisk by Brown's name. Hopefully he will get a hardship waiver and receive an extra year.

At least part of our difficulty at DT can be traced back to missing on 2 recruits in 2011, Terrell Brooks, 6-3, 290 (left program), Micah Thompson, 6-3, 290 (switched to OL), and 2-3 recruits in 2012, Dylan McDorman, 6-2, 300 (gave up football), Sir Calvin, 6-2, 290 (still trying to figure things out), and you might even throw Brad Horton in, 6-5, 225 (DE we tried to convert to DT before he gave up football).

It has been a pretty bad string of luck. Hoping we are pleasantly surprised like last year, but we will have to have some guys really step up.

Solid post greenit. The deal with Brooks is a mystery. Story was he gave up football, then he transferred to a juco and ended up signing with Baylor. McDorman was a very good player that just had major health issues. Horton was a bust that Mac inherited from the prior regime (I honestly had major questions at the time that Dodge was allowed to bring players in that 4th year but it worked in our favor on Marcus Smith). Brown is a good player that had some unlucky injuries. It's been bad luck but also there haven't been enough wins either and you are measured on results.

Brad Horton was a Coach Mac recruit (Class of '12).

Really, go ahead and compare the class of 2010 and the class of 2012 and tell me which one was better.

No Brad Horton was given assurances from a member of the previous staff. Mac just honored it. How can you compare a class (2012) that is not yet two years in place? We won't be able to make an accurate determination on 2012 for at least another season especially with the redshirts.

Coach Dodge was gone in October 2010, and he certainly hadn't offered anyone from the class of 2012, much less had a commitment almost a year and a half before that class's signing day.

How can you compare a class (2012) that is not yet two years in place? We won't be able to make an accurate determination on 2012 for a couple of seasons especially with the redshirts.

Players already gone from the class of 2012:

David Busby

Dustin Clark

Devante Davis

Boone Feldt

Brad Horton

Jarmarcus Jarvis

D.Q. Johnson

Xavier Kelly

Nick Schrapps.

That puts it all on the shoulders of:

Malik Dalonga

Mustafa Haboul

Roderick Lancaster

Mark Lewis

Jamal Marshall

Ryan Rentfro

Jarrian Roberts

Rex Rollins

LaJaylin Smith

Connor Trussell

Sir Calvin Wallace

and Dutton Watson

to match the contributions of:

Richard Abbe

Aaron Bellazin

Chris Bynes

Brandin Byrd

Brelan Chancellor

Ryan Downing

Blake Dunham

Stephen Ford

Brad Graham

Antonio Johnson

Forlando Johson

Zach Olen

Zach Orr

Derrick Teegarden

Will Wright

and Mason Y'Barbo.

Maybe I'll be very surprised, but I don't see it happening.

I talked with Liberty coach Greg Price for a minute or two about Brad Horton, his defensive end who committed to UNT last night [sep. 8, 2011]. . . .

The family sat down with Dan McCarney and really liked him.

Clint Bowen recruited Horton.

I was told that Horton was brought in from a previous staff...but it makes sense now that he was referring to Bowen not anyone from Dodge. So my mistake I mis worded that. As far as your comparison of classes, yes there were some great players in that 2010 class but also a lot of jucos and busts as well. My point is only that Mac's 2012 contains a lot more high school players, many who have redshirted and have 2-3 years of eligibility in the program left. No one is doubting that there were too many defections in that 2012 class, and frankly a coach was fired in regards to some of these mistakes. I'm sorry that you have completely given up on the 2012 class already, but you have the right to your opinion. I haven't given up hope that some playmakers from 2012 will yet emerge.

The 2010 class was really one of the more efficient classes you'll ever see. And I think a lot of that has to do with Mac and our staff's ability to develop players as long as we can keep them on campus. The fact that so many 2012 kids have left already is what makes that class disappointing so far. But I think the ones who have stayed are going to have it benefit them. Just like how Malik Dilonga had a breakthrough spring.

But that 2010 class (outside of the desperation JUCOs Dodge signed) featured 12 high school signees. 1 of which left early and never contributed (Graylin Hawkins). Out of the other 11 we had 9 multi-year starters and Richard Abbe (played plenty in first three years including spot start here and there). Also had 5 all-conference players.

If we can get that kind of efficiency going forward, coupled with bigger high school classes not consisting of so many desperation JUCOs, we will have a stacked roster. Maximizing production the way Mac did with the class of 2010 will have us in the hunt for the West every year.

Dodge's problem was never getting talent, it was knowing how to develop and coach it.

I still think it is funny that Mac talked about how small we were when he got here and yet we will be much smaller on the DL in Macs 4th year than we were in Dodge's last year. In Mac's position of specialty, nonetheless.

But Coach Mac is a head coach, and head coaches know how to coach speak. Those comments were made to ensure he had as much time as possible to do what he wanted to do at UNT. So far, so good. This year will tell us a lot about Mac and his staff's recruiting ability.

I agree, but I think we all probably all agree he had 3 years (minimum) to do it, no matter the coach speak. Getting 9 wins in year 3 in a program like this pretty much sealed the deal until retirement, even if they fall this year. Thankfully, we play a ridiculously easy (on paper) schedule in a full rebuilding year. Anyone who thinks replacing 7 defensive starters on a team that won because of its D isn't a rebuilding year, needs to lay of the green kool-aid. Oh and 6 starters from offense, including the QB and Brelen.

Darrell Dickey would disagree.

And ya, I may not have spelled his first name right, but too lazy to look it up.

Ryan counted towards the 2010 recruiting class. He signed with the 2009 class but was gray shirted to rehab a shoulder he had surgery on in June of 2009.
