Crowd enthusiasm is a direct result of play on the field.

I remember the crowd being quite loud during the last drive. Before that, there wasn't really a reason to be loud.

And hence the nickname Apathy Stadium. Crowd should be loud every time the opposing offense is on the field no matter what the score is. Crowd enthusiasm direct result of play on the field? What about a whole season of play on the field that resulted in an opportunity to clinch West division? No? Not good enough?

But hey, at least the crowd was loud when our offense was on the field driving to tie the game......................

http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/articles/70209135/evaluation-crowd-noise-levels-during-college-football-games

Crowd noise at sporting events is a highly publicized acoustic phenomenon in the mainstream media because it is widely believed to influence the game. However, very little rigorous scientific data exist on the topic. Perhaps the sport where crowd noise can have the biggest impact on the game outcome is American football. Football crowd noise can make it difficult for teams to communicate on the field and even induce penalties. In 2007 and 2009, researchers from Penn State University's Graduate Program in Acoustics measured crowd noise at three Penn State football home games. Noise generated by the crowd was rigorously quantified and synchronized to events during the game. Peak levels of 123-140 dB and max 10-second equivalent levels of 109-114 dB were recorded. Maximum possible communication distances were computed around the field using measured A-weighted equivalent sound pressure levels. Communication distances are shown to be limited to less than 3 meters on the field depending on which team (home or visitor) has the ball and the location on the field. The subjective loudness psychoacoustic metric, measured in sones, was used to show that the crowd noise experienced by the visiting team is subjectively 2-3 times louder than that experienced by the home team. This results in a distinct, measurable home field advantage.

There is a position, that some of these preseason mags are taking and it's putting more stock in "the program" than in returning starters, lettermen etc...

I tend to lean that way myself. What we saw in that UNLV win was more than just a few starters. They were great players and surely will be missed but the program has become physical, faster more disciplined. Would I prefer that we had a returning QB to lead us? Of course. But I have faith in Mac and his system, He hasn't built this deal relying on jucos. There are some guys who haven't played much but have been in the program for 2-3 years. For all we know, they could be good contributors this season and beyond.

I think we will run the ball very well this season. That will take some of the heat off of the defense early on so some of these younger players can find their way, I also think our special teams will be strong. We will miss Chancellor but we have a great punter and quite possibly the best kicking group we have had in a long time.

TOTALLY AGREE. Tons of other programs out there lose starters every year & seem to bounce back with the next group. I think this is a testament to what people believe Coach Mac is doing here - building it the right way & hopefully having continued success.

Who calls it that? You?

Living where I do, I typically only make one or two home games a year. But "apathy" couldn't be any further from describing my experiences at Apogee.

I don't call it that, but I'm on a mission to change that. I've heard it called that countless times. Just search "apathy" in the forums and you'll get 5 pages of results and most of them are used describing the fan base. Last fall, King_of_the_North replied to one of my posts referencing it.

"I saw you! I think if we got enough ppl interest we could change the culture of "apathy stadium". Its gotta start somewhere. It really starts with them winning. but having a group of 20 ppl show up, dressed up and be into it would help too."

Rick Gosselin wrote an article in 2011 and stated that McCarney's toughest foe was "fan apathy"

"Second, McCarney needed to change the football culture at North Texas. Even though he drew a schedule this fall that included two top-10 teams in the opening month, No. 2 Alabama and No. 8 Houston, McCarney knew there was an even tougher foe awaiting him: fan apathy."

Unfortunately, this apathy still exists and it was never more evident then on that cold November day versus UTSA. Hopefully, that was the last time. There were times you could hear a pin drop. That's not the type of environment there should be at a college football game on senior day with a championship on the line. At least, not in my opinion.

Every time I hear a new fan call a crowd pathetic, I think of the cold, rainy Fouts games on holiday weekends.

There is a lot of room for improvement, but this program has come along very far. Calling out fans for being pathetic only creates a disconnect and you lose your audience. The only people you're firing up are the people on this board, who represent the group of fans you have the least to be concerned about.

I was at the utsa game and dude is right. The atmosphere was pathetic. It was a cold day, but that doesn't stop other programs from packing a stadium for a clinching type game. The rice game needs to be the standard, in noise and attendance. It wasn't a complete sellout, but it damn sure sounded like it.

New fan? I was a student from '02 - '06. I was in Talons, got to run the flag and fire Boomer. Met my wife at Fouts when she took my front row seat on 50 yard line. Had our first kiss on top of the bonfire the night before it burned. You may have spent some cold rainy games at Fouts, but did you spend any cold rainy all-nighters on top of the bonfire so it wouldn't be burned prematurely?

My freshman year I had pink eye and still showed up to yell and scream and felt like death warmed over after. I'm sorry if you all think that wasn't a pathetic crowd vs. UTSA. It was. I'm not happy about it either.

And no MG 93-98, that's not my mission. My mission is to get people hyped and to make some noise. My mission is to try and get y'all thinking positively. Maybe I wouldn't get so worked up if I didn't come on here and read ridiculously negative comments seemingly all the time.

I'm not trying to insult anyone. I'm trying to say we can do better, a lot better. Players have their job to do. Coaches have their job to do. And believe it or not, we as fans have a job to do. Let's do it better than ever before so that 6-0 happens in Apogee.

GMG.com isn't the right soap-box for this. We're all die-hards here... even the ones who criticize.

Yeah, most of the folks on here are on board. But a real life, true marketing campaign needs to start taking shape. A GMG held BBQ, GMG shirts promoting the 2014 season, etc. something. When I went to orientation the push towards athletics was rather nonexistent. Maybe the football program can provide a couple "star" players in unis and Coach Mac to speak to the freshmen and transfers at orientation. I still like the idea that someone brought up about having players/Mac deliver tickets to season ticket holders that live in a 15-20 mile radius. Eddie needs to reference these ideas back to the marketing department.

They have "Football and High Heels" approaching. Generate some interest among the ladies who make financial decisions in most households.

And yes, we're all die hards except Antonio Daroadrunner, but we can all make some more noise and bring some more energy. There should be 30k in attendance vs SMU, no excuses. Now, how will those 30K act? That's up to us to set the tempo and show these newcomers how you act when you are in APOGEE!!! We can either drown the ponies out with noise, or let them go ahead and execute their offense with no trouble at all like UTSA did. I don't want 30,000 Melvin Greenes, I want 30,000 MEAN GREEN MEN!

So yea, that's my mission. If you want to criticize, go for it. You want to downplay the season we have in front of us, fine. Just do me a favor and make more noise than you ever have in your life on 9/6/2014. I'll do the same. In the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter @DLLoyd621 and reference the pic I tweeted yesterday when people talk bad about Mean Green Football...

C'mon JRock, thought you knew MGM after HOD Bowl. I don't call it Apathy Stadium, I'm on a mission to change that perception.

97and03...we travel to places that have dead crowds. DUH! DKR is going to have 100K strong, but how hyped will they be? Not as much as me.

Is the New Orleans Bowl no longer tied to CUSA? And why do they list the New Mexico Bowl twice?

If I'm counting right, I see at least six bowls for 2014 here.

Thanks for the link. A lot of those locations are pretty cool. HOD is always going to be beneficial for us. Any bowl in Florida would be fun. The New Mexico Bowl would be cool to tie a ski trip into. Football followed with a nice couple of days in Taos. Awesomeness.
