Drove by UTSA this weekend as we went to eat in the Mercado. Reminds me alot of a fancier CCCC - Plano Campus.

Sounds like they're moving up. Next milestone is the CCCC-McKinney Campus

What concerns me with our roster compared to theirs (and others) They have 22 players 280lbs or more of which 7 are DT's. We have 15 players 280 or more of which 1 is a DT. Size does not make a player. I understand. Still I am concerned that we have failed to bulk up the DL. Something I thought would happen under McCarney.

BTW looking over their roster it is strange how so many players weigh the exact same and land on even numbers.

Smallest team in FBS?

Soza was a big difference maker. Not only all year, but definitely in our game. The question for me is (and this is assuming they are fully intact in the rest of their positions by the time they play us) can Carter, or his backup, become the same kind of difference maker by the last game of the season? If the answer is yes, then we "potentially" will be in for a long afternoon.

A lot of stuff happens between the beginning of fall practice and Nov. 29th. Some teams totally fall apart, and some that are rebuilding finally come together.

As my first supervisor (who was an English teacher in her previous profession) used to say.....There's many a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip.

Soza gone is big.

But he wasn't the one making our offense look like dudiepie.

No lie, they scare me.

Our offense did not play well, but we won games with our defense. Our defense did not come to play. They only put up 21 points, but we could not get any stops.

We lost the turnover battle in 3 games. Ohio, Georgia, and UTSA. All losses.

Gave up 26 first downs. The most all season. 14-20 3rd down conversion.

They ran 80 plays for 458 yards. Soza gave us a lot of problems.

As far as our offense, our success will depend on if the running game improves. I think our running game will be a lot better this season with the line returning, Jim, and the addition of Evans and other fast backs.

Good points and noted.

If that is true, my only worry is that Soza was making short pedestrian throws and letting the skill players create, which gave us problems. They can get any one of their future QBS to follow that formula.

It depends. I had a chance to speak with someone close to the situation about UTSA a week before the game. (not a player) he told me UTSA does some things that will give us (defense) some trouble. He did not predict a loss, but he wasnt his usual confident self. We did not go into specifics.

I watched enough of this season to know our weaknesses so he didnt have to go into detail. We are going to stop the run with numbers. The safeties are coming up. Play action can hurt us. Our corners are playing safe. Very rare that they are able to come up and jump a short route with no safety help. The corners are going to give up 5 yards and come up and make the tackle. Its a bend dont break defense and we are waiting for a mistake or errant throw. We are not going to force the issue a lot.

With soza, they were prepared for this. If the next qb has a nice play action that can freeze our safeties and backers, and if he has a quick release where he can get the ball out, then we COULD have trouble again. Depends. Our defense may be faster next year at certain positions. A faster, quicker defense can shut a lot of that dinking and dunking down. Im sure we will be better prepared for that style next time.

Thanks for the seemingly informed opinion GOMG2013. Props

NT lost that game because inexplicably UTSA wanted that game much more and Mc for some reason much like the Tulane game played a very basic offense until it was too late to come back. NT had the better team in both of those games.

Wow impressed - great description.

I just think next to Georgia UTSA may have been the fastest team we played last season top to bottom.

My take on the UTSA game is that we tried to force the deep pass all game long unsuccessfully. We were killing the success we were having with our vanilla schemes and giving the defense a short field. I put that loss in DT's and Chicos lap. They did not have a good game.

Somebody's paying attention...I didnt want to just come out and say they were faster than us, but there it is...and they will be fast next year.

Soza beat us last year. He extended plays with his maneuverability in and around the pocket and he ran for first downs as well. He was the difference in that game. The other factor in that game was piss poor play calling. Bad play calling is something that just happens. Offensive coordinators also have "good" and "bad" games. Chico had a bad game v utsa. This year Soza is gone, so unless utsa has another Soza in their back pocket I expect a W in santon.

I expect the same play calling on offense. Its who we are. Im a tenn titan fan, and this reminds me of Jeff Fisher all over again. It took him forever to finally trust Steve McNair and even then he had to have solid players like wycheck and mason.

We are going to run the ball. we are going to play good defense and key on the run. Run the ball, stop the run. Play solid special teams. Only time we throw is when we have to. 1st quarter is considered too early. 7 or 14 point deficit, no big deal. The philosophy is we didnt score, but we are still wearing them down. We will get those points on the back end.

if McNulty can be a decent runner, I dont mind him being in there. If we are going to be predictable and run, at least give the defense two guys to worry about than just one.

And if we are going to run so much, why not use a two back set? Once again, at least you cant key on just one guy. Jim and Evans in the backfield with a decent runner at qb can be dangerous, or at least hard to key on if its a guaranteed run.

I think if you look at our 3rd down conversions in this game and it will tell the tale.

The defense let them drive it down our throat the first time they had the ball... that makes a statement. Give them confidence.

We did our typical start out slow out of the gate and started to come on but it was too late. We still should have been able to tie that game at the end.

Soza was just the best player on the field that day. He made very few (any?) mistakes as opposed to his other games.

Can't run the ball with 8 and sometimes 9 in the box all the time. If the vertical passing game is not improved from last year, the running game problems will remain. With a dropoff at QB, they may even be worse.
