MGB: Spring game thoughts, individual stats

It sounds like a lot of posters believe we need to get a coach in here with a focus on opening up the offense and who is willing to throw the ball around.

If there were only some way of knowing how things might turn out if we follow that blueprint for success.

I mean it's not like there has ever been a coach who had success at North Texas who has been so naïve as to rely on a strong defense and a power running game.

Hayden Fry had a strong defense and a pro-style offense. The ball was spread around a lot.

AND, when Scott Davis was at QB, we ran the "flying wishbone". Equal parts run and gun.

The most successful offenses are balanced. Run 50% and throw 50% of the time on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd downs.

It's not one or the other. It's a combination.

ding ding ding! Running at 8-9 man fronts on every F'in 1st down will carry you nowhere. Running on every single 2 & short is and should be a typical pass play, not at North Texas. I'm saying I don't give a flying mother lover of god who the head coach is. I care that he plays the situation of the game that is at hand on a given play and not a premeditated game plan of running into brick walls.

I guess I would consider the current scheme to be a pro-style offense as well, but most seem to think of it as having a power running identity. It was a bit surprised to see that Mac's offenses have generated more passing yards than rushing yards per game in each of his 1st 3 years, while the two periods referenced (with the implication that they were more wide open) previously all generated more rushing yards per game than passing in all but 1 season.

DMac era offensive stats (note that somehow there are more passing yards than running yards per game in each of 1st 3 seasons):

DT personal stats (year - yds)

2009 - 60, 2010 - 83, 2011 - 1759, 2012 - 2629, 2013 - 2896 (includes bowl)

2011 - Passing = 189.3, Rushing = 152.4

2012 - Passing = 219.1, Rushing = 173.1

2013 - Passing = 229.8, Rushing = 180.7

Hayden Frye era offensive stats:

1973 - Passing = 180.5, Rushing = 74.1

1974 - Passing = 113.0, Rushing = 153.8

1975 - Passing = 104.4, Rushing = 138.5

1976 - Passing = 135.5, Rushing = 144.1

1977 - Passing = 173.5, Rushing = 182.9

1978 - Passing = 163.7, Rushing = 212.0

Scott Hall Years:

Personal (year - yds)

2000 - 937, 2001 - 1453, 2002 - 35, 2003 - 1580, 2004 - 1818 (includes bowl)

Team (yds/game)

2000 - Passing = 107.3, Rushing = 134.3

2001 - Passing = 141.8, Rushing = 160.4

2002 - Passing = 102.1, Rushing = 182.5

2003 - Passing = 149.9, Rushing = 177.5

2004 - Passing = 157.6, Rushing = 186.4

We are a pro style offense. BUT MAC RUNS ON 1ST GUYS

Also. Anyone impressed with Greer running the no huddle?

McNulty looked good minus some miss throws with his WR's. Wasn't all too impressed with Greer but he is with a new team and in a new system so he might turn it around in the spring. I was super impressed with Connor Means but still has plenty of room to grow.

If D Terrell and C Harris can stay healthy and these young recruits can come in and make any kind of impact, I am super excited about our WR core.

My impressions of the QBs are:

McNulty: The least toolsy but pretty clearly the most comfortable in the system. There's not any more potential there; we're looking at what we're going to get from him.

Greer: The biggest arm of the four but still not acclimated to the system. He even throws ducks with authority.

Means: I was most impressed with him out of the four I saw yesterday. Played with more poise and confidence than I would have expected from a young guy.

Cousins: Looked solid. Didn't pay a whole lot of attention to him because I was watching his o-line and the green defense while he was taking his snaps.

While I was most impressed with Means, I thought Greer looked the best of the bunch. He's who I would want under center on August 30th, assuming he can get more comfortable in the system.

Anyone else think that Akunne looks like he's added some size this Spring?

Really wish we could have seen Dajon. That dude is the Jurickson Profar of Mean Green football.

My prediction: We'll see McNulty under center on August 30th in Austin, Texas. Dajon could take a step forward but I don't expect it. Greer could become more comfortable in the system, but I don't expect that, either. McNulty can drive the hell out of Mac's bus, and that's what Mac wants from his QB.

I think it's amazing that, when looking for a game where Mac's vanilla philosophy cost us, nobody points to the game against San A tonio Community College.

Also, it is true that we will miss DT. Just not because he was anything special. Little Mac is just that much less special.

Now emmitt01, I just want to inform you that I am a fine graduate of San Antonio Junior College before my life changing experience at the University of North Texas...

I EXPECT Greer to be to be a lot more comfortable by June 2nd. McNulty looked good (ok) yesterday, but Greer has only been with this offense for a couple months. Greer is competing with guys that have been learning the offense for 1-3 years and still looked a hair better. I EXPECT great things. AND- he works his A off. DW.... we'll see. I hope he finds himself as ambitious as his cohorts come fall.

Why 'da hell do we have to "blame" anyone????

It is a damned game, and sometimes you intercept - and sometimes you get intercepted. Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose - hopefully more often the former than the latter.

This crap of blaming players and coaches for not being perfect is just that - crap!!!

Jeez!

Thank you. Well said.

I think that we won't know the starting quarterback until the week before the season opener.

Everyone was decently good and no one was bad. There were no interceptions and completion percentages and yardages weren't that far apart. There were a few drops of catchable balls but also a spectacular catch or two. I believe that we see the former improve and the new receivers will make the quarterbacks better. I also saw a little deception with some of the handoffs in that I wasn't sure for a second who had the ball unlike last year when everyone in the stadium knew who had the ball.

Whoever comes in this fall with the best attitude, in better shape, and can make the best decisions will be the starting quarterback. As much as I was impressed with Means, he is probably the only one that I would rule out. DW has a lot of catching up to do but a lot of talent to get it done. McNulty is much improved and Greer seems to be mastering the system so I expect a tight race for the starting job.

From BV's blog....

Receiving
Carlos Harris 9 catches, 86 yards, 1 TD
Darius Terrell 3 catches, 74 yards
Darvin Kidsy 5 catches, 60 yards
Jarrod Lynn 1 catch, 58 yards
Andrew Tucker 2 catches, 57 yards
Antoinne Jimmerson 2 catches, 12 yards
Roderick Lancaster 1 catch, 11 yards
Clayton Adams 1 catch, 8 yards
Mark Lewis 1 catch, 3 yards

I don't know if anyone else took notice of Jarrod Lynn's one moment in the sun Saturday, but I did. That 58 yard play was half catch and half him running and making noticeable yards after the catch. Most notable to me was that he had surprising speed and it took two or three guys to finally bring him down. At one of the earlier spring practices they were running short yardage situations (4th and 1-type situations) and they had Mr. Lynn in there playing the Richard Abbe role.....and he was pretty effective. Very quick off the line and very strong. He was never pushed back.

Just a heads up. This is a Miller/Pryor type blue collar player who's a bit quicker and "appears" to be just slightly faster than Miller/Pryor. We have a lot of TE's on this roster who are much more physically impressive in size, but IMHO #98 really wants to be out there playing.

His nickname is White Mamba... he's been incredibly loyal to this program and worked very hard. I was glad to hear his name as it gives hope to many others.

I'm going to make a bold prediction and I hope I'm completely wrong, but I don't think Dajon will ever see the field. I have no inside information that leads me to believe this. Just a hunch.

I see your bold prediction and raise you with the following hunch:

DW will be the starting QB by the 3rd game of the season (conference opener).

[puts on sun glasses and sits very still]

When has Mac shown that he might consider replacing the starting qb?

By opening up a 2 year starter and returning senior QB's job not only last spring, but continuing the competition into last fall?

And that was a 2 year starter. If you think the hook won't come out early for an ineffective QB this year, I think you are mistaken.
