DENTON, Texas -- "Can you hold that not so close to your face? Thank you."

Layton Foster furrowed his eyebrows at the request from his mother, and the almost angelic patience he had displayed for the better part of the past hour dissipated ever so slightly into the stubbornness more readily associated with a 4-year-old boy, especially one who had recently skipped his regular afternoon nap. He grudgingly moved the tablet in his hands an almost imperceptible distance from his face and continued to play a video game.

"Hey," came his mom's voice, and the sudden sharpness of that word conveyed a note of warning. "Not so close to your face."

Her patience tried, he did as she said without further complaint and resumed his wait.

As an athletic director and as a coach I have seen thousands of athletes pass through our doors. Brooke is not only the epitome of a student-athlete but a shining example to me, her coaches and her teamates about what commitment, determination and faith really means. She eventually eaned a scholarship for her play but more importantly for the lessons she taught every who surrounded her. Her persistence is in stark contrast to many who shrink from challenges in today's society. I am thankful that she was brought into our lives here at North Texas.

Saw that story while sitting on the plane last night (in delay, like the girls were today). Enjoyed reading about Brooke, and noticed the RV comment also. Nice that Brooke was open to telling her story.

Proud of our ladies, proud of the team, proud.

I know nothing of these ladies outside of what I see on the field, and the little reveal some offer on Twitter. But seeing them close up in a lot of game circumstances, you somehow feel like you get a bit of their off-the-field persona.

Great story. This young lady knows what it takes to be successful and is willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. She should be a very successful mom and career woman. Very happy for her and her family.
