Super Pit comes in at #54

The University of North Texas Coliseum is where the Mean Green men's and women's basketball teams play, but the arena is more commonly known as the Super Pit. The nickname arose because the previous, smaller, gym was known as the Snake Pit (since it would flood on occasion and snakes would be found as the water cleared). Even now, the larger signs outside advertise the Super Pit, while the official name is still visible on much smaller signage.

I can't believe they ranked every single one! I was thinking maybe top 100 at the most.

ODU's new arena looks to be very nice. I'm hoping to make game up there for either BB or football in the future

Neither have I. Or anybody else. They must have thought that sounded more interesting.

i have heard the story about the name before, of course it is wrong. The name took hold after Maury John the renowned Drake coach called the place the Snake Pit and I think was quoted in Sports Illustrated.

Not sure if it was John or someone else or if it was quoted by SI but that is how the "Men's Gym" was nicknamed The Snake Pit. I was there (as a kid) in the day and it was a fitting name.

Interesting. With all the pub SMU's squad got this year and the endless "Moody is an incredible venue" articles, radio segments, and newscasts we saw this year, I wonder how the local perception of The Pit would be if we had a similar top 25 year...

The list was a bit dated. He mentioned there was no overhead scoreboard.

I think if you check, the comparison to a pit of snakes was made by Ralph Miller, head coach at Wichita State in the early sixties.

Nope...it was Maury Johns who called us the worst crowd in college basketball and that our gym was a snake pit. Fittingly, the next home game after Johns' quote someone threw a snake out onto the floor of the gym.

And in all my years in Denton I've never heard of the old Men's Gym, renamed the Ken Bahnsen Gym, flooding.
