Good summary. The starting QB will be the one who demonstrates these attributes the most. I would love, of course, but that to be the most talented athlete as well, but all levels of football are filled with talented players who never reach their potential for one reason or another. The rules are clear, we will find out who wants the job enough to respond to them.

When a player doesn't reach his potential it is because of coaching, or lack thereof. That's uhh...a coaches job.

Some players will never get it. No matter what a coach does. A team should never be held hostage by a player. No matter how talented they are, if they refuse to get with the program, shame on them. They can sit the bench or transfer. Obviously, they are kids and need to be guided, but there are hopeless causes. I'm not going to blame the coaches every time a kid doesn't live up to what the fans perceive that player should achieve.

Fans aren't creating that perception. Inside chatter is. DW is the best QB on the roster. A gut feeling tells me that if he doesn't start it's not bc he doesn't know the play book, it'll be because he's an improviser and Mac wants to micromanage the every step his QB takes while between the lines. And it'll be a shame to the team, students, Alums, and Denton. Find your best 11 from their respective positions and start them. The rest will work itself out. If McNulty starts in Austin expect a 40-7 type game. Then expect a probable loss v SMU and a struggle against a very weak CUSA schedule. QB's are a make or break type position. I like Coach McCarney, but I hope his ego gets out of his own way.

Very good post.

That's absurd. How is that some players thrive under the same coach, while others refuse to take any responsibility and waste their talents....often off the field. Come on, these are not kindergarten children. The coach can encourage and teach (some are better than others), but at some point the player has to grow up and accept some responsibility. Not saying that is the case here, but it is a very common experience at every college under every type of coach. Some "get it" and some "don't".

its not absurd. The best coaches know how to talk or act towards to or at certain players in certain ways in order to peel the layers away and get through to the player whether his issue is on or off field. That is why the coaches get paid the big bucks. If they can't do that for the betterment of the team why pay them half or even a quarter of what they make. I'm not referring this to DW, just speaking in general.

But, We won 9 games last year with it...

Derek Thompson's on field performance won us 2 games, Ball St and UNLV. His on field performance was also had key contributions in losing us 2 games, Tulane and Ohio. Mac's ego was acceptable last year bc we had a good D and ST. Let's not forget he won 9 games his first 2 years.

Most people want to see DW. Even the ones that voted for someone else. You are preaching to the choir. The ones that picked McNulty and Greer are picking them based on what they think the coaches will do.

If the poll was who do you want to be the qb, it would be around 90% dw. most on here wanted Brock to get a shot also.

But it's not who we want to BE QB, it's who we want to WIN the QB job.

Cant win the job without a decent shot, and that is a lot of the fan's frustration. And if McNulty becomes the starter, we missed some situations to him some valuable real gametime experience. He has some experience, but by going off some of the comments, the experience was bad most if the time. Cant really say he has had a shot either.

30 year coaching "philosophy" = ego. Not bashing on the man, just stating to what I think is obvious observations. His 18-19 record at North Texas and his 74-104 overall head coaching record could be helped with a touch of innovation. With Greer or McNulty as our starter we are looking at a hopeful 6-6 record. DW's athleticism by extending plays, running for needed 1st downs, keeping possessions alive, pocket awareness, downfield accuracy/arm strength could allow North Texas to steal a couple games, maybe even 3. All of those attributes are potential game changers. I hope for the sake of humility and competition they are holding out naming DW the starter. He is cut & dry, clear as day the best QB on this roster. There is really no debate to that.

You do realize that Mac's record is a product of Iowa State being a dumpster fire and UNT being 2 years from FCS, right?

So would Steve Spurrier, Jimbo, Gus Malzahn, Nick Saban, Al Golden, Joe Pa, etc. etc. go 74-104 at Iowa State and North Texas? Not a cold day chance in hell. Winners win, losers try to make justifiable excuses while getting ran out of town. Innovation would do this team wonders, best attribute of the team as a whole? Speed. What do you want to do with speed? Put it in open space. Not put it in a rugby scrum for 40/55 plays. It is what it is.

He may be the most athletic but that doesn't make him the best quarterback. I doubt that DT was the most talented quarterback last year but he made the best decisions and provided leadership. So far, DW hasn't proved that he can make the best decisions or he would clearly be the starter. And, with one of the lowest workout records, that sure doesn't smack of leadership.

I just want a quarterback who will be the most productive starting. If it's DW that's fine and he does bring an added dimension to have to defense. But, don't sell Greer short either. He threw one interception in 149 passes last year so he can throw when needed. I don't know about Little Mac; maybe he'll rise to the occasion out from under DT's shadow. I don't believe that we'll know anything before mid-August and all of the plaudits that any of us could give any candidate won't tilt the starting scales one inch.
