I feel bad for Combs & Wesley. I think some may look at them to turn this think around & put up big numbers.Truth is, they are a few years away. Both have a lot of work to do before they are significant players in CUSA

Exactly. We need them to be more than what we should be asking of them. That's not exactly a fair situation for them. Edited by BillySee58

I'm less worried about hiring an experienced head coach (I like Sadler, but I have a lot of the same concerns with him that I did/do with Kaspar) than I am about hiring someone before the end of April vs. a year from now. My dream candidate at the moment is a career assistant, 20 years in the business but no head coaching experience anywhere. On the surface, that sounds exactly like Benford.

Also, I think the chances of a firing aren't great, but they're a lot higher than most people seem to think. Just for a few weeks, believe in the possibility that a change might actually be coming soon. If it doesn't, there will be years and years for lamentation anyway.

Why isn't anybody suggesting that the BOR or whoever the the powers that be are fire both RV and Benford at the same time?

RV should not have a hand in choosing our next coach, period.

I'm so torn on this. I don't want to be ungrateful, and he is the one who brought us Mac. And Mac has and is doing really good things for this program. At the same time I don't have a lot of confidence in him to make a good hire. Not to mention on the baseball front.

I'm 99.9% Benny will be back, but I'd expect him to be on a short leash. A win over Rice guarantees us a .500 record ( on paper). I just don't see RV canning anyone over that, he's kept a lot worse around. Now a loss vs Rice and things might get interesting..

I still say we have talent to beat Rice & Tulane in tournament.

A second loss to Rice means we have our second season in a row of a losing record. If history is any indicator, beating Rice is not a given.

If we play Rice like we played Tulsa last night in terms of effort I give us good shot at winning.

OK - - as of yesterday my sources in Denton indicate that Benford is not going anywhere next year. With the addition of Combs, Wesley, Ward etc they feel pretty good about where things will be next year and are expecting significant improvement.

I do expect Combs to be our leading rebounder all 4 years that he's here

I just don't think we have the money to buy out such a contract.... and then have the money to give to a new quality head coach. I

That may not be asking too much. Asking him to be our rim protector all 4 years at 6'6" and sub 200 lbs is what I'm scared of.

Wishing for significant improvement would be a better statement. Expecting it is dumb.

If your source is a member of the AD, then what you heard is to be expected and doesn't alarm me in the slightest.

I would anticipate a firing to remain EXTREMELY close to the vest in there. Of course, it could be true, and they really aren't looking to make a move. If so, we can only hope our President gets involved.

Face palm.

If this happens and we suck again next year, RV should have his ass canned.

Just keep them fingers crossed and eyes closed and good things will happen! They just know it!

RV doesn't deserve all the credit on the Mac hire. We brought in Chuck Neinas to do the search. Even if you want to give RV credit for Mac, that's 1 good hire for how many program killing hires?

My question to the RV supporters is this, what is the future for us with RV in charge?

We are at a more respectable level in terms of facilities and conference, but I don't see how RV can take us to the next level when coaching decisions are the biggest decisions he has to make now.

God forbid something happens to Mac health-wise, and we put full faith in RV to find the next HFC.

We have 2 basketball coaches under-performing, baseball starting and a HFC who could retire after his extension ends.

Do you trust RV to make coaching decisions that will take us to the next level? I don't.

New softball hire seems to be working out well. Football hire is a good bring in. Both basketball hires are underperforming by large. For crying out loud, we played in the SBC last year with a NBA player and finished 12-20. This year, we just sucked. Plain and simple sucked. Our bigs are the worse I have seen in D1 bball in some time. Gaines has the build and potential to be a staple in the middle, but our c o a c h i n g is horrible. Benford called a 30 sec to before halftime to draw up a play. He drew up a non-isolation post up?! I was dumbfounded.

Very true about Mac, and I agree. No I don't, which is why I said I don't have confidence in him with hirings.

Like I said, I just don't want to come off as ungrateful with what we have going in football. That being said, I think any and all criticism for RV is completely warranted.

You know, Harry, these are the same people who, after last year, tried to float out there that we would be better off without Tony Mitchell on the team. The same people that, when the previous didn't work, then gave cryptic statements blaming player morale and off court activity for last year.

They told us just wait to this year when Benford has guys that buy into system. Just wait and we would see.

Now it's just wait till next year for 3 players that have never played a second of D1 college basketball to save the program?

You gotta be F'n kidding me. How deep are some peoples' heads buried in the sand???

Seriously?

it's time for RV to go. He's done what he can do here.

We need someone new at North Texas who can take us to the NEXT LEVEL. getting rid of RV also includes getting rid of some of his stale upper level associates

I'm thankful for all that RV has done and accomplished, but I think his work here is finished

Agreed on time for RV to go. His coaching hires somehow only turn out well in non-revenue sports, his staff doesn't seem held accountable at all for poor performance, and now that Apogee is built, I don't see any clear vision from his department. I know they dream of filling Apogee and the Super Pit, but it does in fact feel like a dream and not a goal.

He's a nice guy, but he's been in over his head for a while now.

Oh...and fire Benford.
