Athlete who plays for Rouse high school in Leander. Plays qb, but likely projects elsewhere in college. Fast, tough football player already holds offers from SMU, UTSA, and Texas State as well as us.

The best athlete on a high school team usually plays QB.

McCrary runs the Leander offense and is the "One man Show" for Leander.

I see McCrary at RB for North Texas. Great vision, speed ,toughness, and the ability to

make plays out of nothing. McCrary is a play maker for sure!

I hope McCrary will join the Mean Green family!

He could be a D1 caliber running back or receiver. The way he can legitimately project to multiple positions on the D1 level is part of why he's so special. But his potential is much higher on defense IMO. I'd say about 20% chance he plays offense (10% running back, 10% receiver), and 80% chance he plays defense (65% safety, 15% linebacker).

Part of where he ends up would have to do with the school he is going to, and/or where he wants to play. Obviously, some kids' commits are conditional on where the school will let him play. I think that's the most likely situation where he would play offense. If he told schools he wouldn't go there unless they offered him the chance to play O. Other than that, I think he'll end up on defense. Just my inexpert prediction. I could be way off.

Anyways, he's at least up to 195 so that's why I say there's a chance he ends up at backer. 4 of the last 5 high school backers we have signed have been right around, sometimes under, 200 lbs. Mccrary is already at that weight, basically. Also, he's on a visit to Texas Tech right now. Interesting to see if they'll be his first P5 offer.

Mccrary, a unanimous 3-star player on all 4 major recruiting sites, has picked up a Rice offer recently but no P5 offers still. This kid could be a stud safety for us, and our safety depth chart is running low with David Busby and Jamarcus Jarvis both quitting since last season ended.

We will return just 3 current scholarship safeties in 2015 in Freddie Warner (will be a senior in 2015), John Shilleci (will be a junior in 2015), and Kishawn McClain (incoming freshman, will either be a Soph or RS Fresh in 2015). We could really use a ready-to-play freshman this class. Mccrary could be just that, and I hope we're making him a priority.

Mccrary's right at the the top of my wish list for this class. I think he'll be a day 1 contributor at safety if we can land him, and legitimately capable of playing either safety position. He could play receiver as well, but I really believe his potential is greatest at safety. Once again, really hope this guy is a class priority.

His dad tweeted that it was 7th best score in the nation for his class

Crazy. It'd be cool if he got an invite to The Opening in Oregon, but I don't think he has a good enough offer list. That could change soon, though.

Whst makes you think he would be a better safety?

Like I've said before, part of what makes him such a stud prospect is that he can legitimately project to multiple positions on the D1 level. That being said, at 5'11" 193 lbs I think his body type is best suited for maximizing his potential at safety.

5'11" means he'd be short for a receiver. He could play the slot and be a good one, but I feel like he could have a bigger impact on a game at safety, especially with us. If he were to go to a school like Tech, that might be a different story. That being said, I think slot receiver may be his second best position, behind safety.

As for running back, again, he could be a good one there as well. I don't quite see his moves with the ball in his hands that would make him an elite running back, like I do with him at safety. A guy like Jeffery Wilson has that ability to plant and cut up field right off his blocks. Mccrary's exceptional speed, solid size, and strength alone could make him a good running back though.

As for defense, I think he's a little on the stout side for a cornerback. Just like the other positions, he could be a good one there too. Corner is the hardest position on defense, maybe in all of football. When you're playing against the elite athletes on the outside, it's just hard to hold as much weight as Mccrary looks like he'll hold, under 6' tall, having to cover these guys every move.

Why I like him at safety is because he just has a check in all the boxes. 5'11" 193 is a great size for safety, especially as a rising senior in high school. Big enough to play strong safety, but not too big where it may be a hindrance. Fast enough to cover all sorts of ground and be a ball-hawking free safety. Strong enough to lay licks in run support. Just has it all as a safety prospect IMO, where he could impact the game every down, against any type of team.

Just my opinion. Looks like this'll be a tough pull anyways.

Thanks for your thoughts. Maybe he will come to his senses between now and February. Edited by UNTLifer

Who would want to play for June Jones? Acts like he could care less what is happening.

He won't be playing for June Jones of he goes to SMU.

As a matter of fact, I doubt any SMU player ever plays for June Jones again...

I think he very well might flip. Watching the team you are committed to get throttled by a team that has offered you usually doesn't bode well for 17-18 year olds. Not saying he'll flip to us, but I definitely see him flipping away from SMwho. Who in gods green earth would want to go there right now is beyond me. In the scenario that he in fact flips to us would speak volumes of regional played games. GMG

Any recruit would be crazy to make a commitment to SMU at this time.

SMU has established that they do not honor the commitments made by their outgoing coaches. They waited until very late in the recruiting period to notify by form letter the recruits that had committed to Phil Bennett that a new coach would not be obligated to honor the university's scholarship offer. Players were suddenly left without anywhere to go as most other schools had pretty much already filled their scholarship allotments.

SMU then allowed it's new coach, June Jones, to take away the atletic scholarships from another dozen students, all in good standing with the university, for no other reason than he wanted to bring in his own people.

Now June Jones does not look too secure in his position at SMU, and it looks as though another group of student athletes that have made a commitment to that university may be disposed and treated like unwanted trash.

I completely forgot about that whole mess. I doubt the current recruiting class is aware of it initially, but you can bet there are high school coaches out there happy to educate the SMU prospects-of-interest.

To add, this is the basic MO for SMUt. Brown basically did the same with the basketball program.
