I think everyone equates MiniMac's first start against a salty Tulsa team on the road to how good he can plan. He - and the entire team - struggled on that particular day no doubt. But he was a true freshman so it's hard to pin a guys career on that one particular outing. Since then he redshirted an entire year and saw spot duty very rarely passing the ball and just trying to keep us out of trouble till DT could get back on the field. He has continuously remained at the top of the offseason workout charts. He has been taking and passing the Chico exams so he will likely be in the lead in that category as well. I think the kid has earned every bit of his scholarship here and will be right in the middle of the battle for the starting spot against UT.

Mini-Mac has shown to have less arm strength than Riley Dodge.

If you think we were hesitant in the vertical passing game last year, just wait and see what we do with Mac under center.

Ball security is also a huge question mark with Mini Mac.

I'll be excited for next year with with DW or Greer under center. Mac? Not so much.

But even if Mac is the starter, I woukd think his running ability would make the read option more dangerous than last year.

He may not have the arm strength to go deep, but I cant see coach Mac going deep too often, no matter who the qb is.

The biggest issue is can he get the balk out quicker as far as his release. Can we run some outs and quick slants off of play action. Being mobile and getting the ball to playmakers in space would still be a good upgrade at the position. Anything that would stop defenses from keying on the run.

I can see Mac going deep more often. He likes to run the ball, but he also allows players to make the plays he trusts them to execute. If they QB-WR tandem prove that they can execute deep routes, then he will let them make big plays. I doubt you will see a lot of it early in the season, but I wouldn't completely rule it out.

That trust issue is part of why I am nervous about McNulty. In the times that he was on the field, he didn't throw the ball a lot. That seems to demonstrate a lack of trust. Maybe that stems from Mac's distrust of a QB coming off the bench cold and making mistakes, but it could mean something else as well.

I still think McNulty looked brilliant for the one time he had an opportunity to let loose last year against Georgia. Went 5-6 and the only incomplete was a drop. It was just one drive, but he was placing the ball perfectly, even on the run and had plenty of mustard on it.

Not enough sample size, but I liked what I saw.

.

Inability to throw deep will mean 8 and 9 man fronts on every down.

It will severly limit the offense.

yes in the last 1:53 of a lost game he was badass throwing no more than 9 yards to 3rd string receivers.

btw he was 5-5.

And the only other pass he threw on the year in the 7 games he played in was an INT.

I looked it up and you're right, but I do remember thinking that we hadn't moved the ball that well since the rain started.

The way I see it though, we have options and if he wins the job, he will deserve it. I know a lot of people don't trust Coach Mac to choose a QB, but I do.

That said, I'm pulling for DW and hope to see Greer if not Dajon.
