I've been a student for 4 years. Freshman and sophomore year basketball program was good, football was bad. As football improved basketball declined. Is this how small schools usually work? I noticed the good CUSA teams in basketball weren't good at football

I wouldn't say it's rare, but it does seem relatively uncommon for a school to enjoy championships in both sports at the same time.

I always think of U of Florida but, for every example like them, there are 10 more like us.

Stanford is another one and might be the most remarkable: those athletes have the toughest academic standards in D1 sports, yet they are competing at the highest level year in and out.

I think it happens with most programs (big or small) without any correlation. SMU was hot with June Jones initially (football) and bad in hoops under Doh. They're #23 in hoops now with Larry Brown and non-bowl eligible in football. Many times the ups and downs experienced in a particular sport has been with the same coach. So, history suggest there could be a turnaround with Benford (that's a joke).

Duke never had a football team untill now. Coach K' s program is somewhat down by their standards. This is one reason you shouldn't totally fall in love with a coach after a good season or two. Everybody (or most) have been fired. We are fortunate to be in a good market for talent in both major sports. We shouldn't suffer too long in either. The programs and administrations, however, must be held accountable.
