McCarney says UNT addressed needs with class

North Texas offensive coordinator Mike Canales was blown away when he ventured to East Texas to take a look at the Carthage receiving duo of Tee Goree and O’Keeron Rutherford.

Both had size, speed and a knack for running routes that left defenders turning in all the wrong directions.

The duo quickly became a priority for UNT in recruiting and, on Wednesday, the headliners of a signing class heavy on offensive skill-position players.

The Mean Green broke through for a 36-14 win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on New Year’s Day — its first bowl win since 2002 — largely due to a core of highly productive running backs and receivers and the veteran quarterback who got them the ball.

UNT’s coaching staff felt like it needed to reload after losing several of those players to graduation and says it reached its goal on national signing day.

“When you look at the receivers we lost,” UNT head coach Dan McCarney said, “you had better address those needs.”

We picked up 2 guys out of Copperas Cove in 2010. One, a big bruising RB that we were all excited about, and the other, a small WR that we believed was a tag-a-long and weren't sure would ever see the field here.

We're all looking for big things from Goree, and I have no doubt he'll deliver... like Byrd did, but keep an eye on Mr. Rutherford.

I felt that Byrd was the Robin in that duo at the time.

Not many people knew about Brelan did they? Wasn't he a "Wingback" in the Copperas Cove offense? Byrd was the feature back if I'm not mistaken. Cove had SEVERAL studs come through there for a few years...

It's hard not to get excited about these skill players this year. The 2 QB's, 4 WR's and the RB's (Ivery and Wilson) are impressive kids on tape for sure. Ivery looks "Dunbar-esque" and Wilson looks like a hybrid of Mark Lewis and Rex Rollins out of HS. Again, we may not know much about these kids for 2-3 years (attribute that to the player development talent of this staff) but there are some damn fine athletes in this recruiting class.
