Who will start next year on defense?

North Texas Shep

His ability to penetrate the LOS reminds me a lot of Brandon Kennedy. It's obviously high school, but one can dream.

He has been killing it in workouts, at least the 2 weeks that I looked at. That is good news for this program. Don't know if he will start, but if we are going to be all we can be next year, he needs to be in the rotation, in my opinion.

If Warner is healthy he is a lock at safety. He was a starter until he suffered a broken arm I believe. Sed Ellis might sneak up on someone and swipe a LB position. The Dline has to eat and lift like wild animals for the next 7 months or Texas will gash us on the ground.

Ummmm.....gonna have to disagree with you there. Dude has injury prone written all over him (hate to say that). He might get to rotate in at Safety but I see no "lock" in this scenario.

? Has former great North Texas All American Brandon "Booger" Kennedy at 5'9 or 5'10" forever diminished the height factor for future Mean Green defensive linemen? Of course as we all know....Booger was very special no matter his true height.

North Texas Mean Green All American Booger Kennedy:

:thumbsu: Many of our favorite Booger Kennedy moments at our (very loud) former football stadium, ie, Fouts Field. Winning this game got North Texas a ticket to our 2'nd bowl game in a row where the Mean Green would beat the U of Cincinnati Bearcats at the New Orleans Bowl.

I agree. He has been getting 5 stars every day for all 3 Weeks. He will be in the mix at DT. Maybe a rotation guy, but I see him playing and possibly pushing for a starting spot.

Maybe I am reading too much into the offseason, but from my conversations, the coaches do too.

a. Wallace and f. Warner has been killing it all 3 Weeks, everyday also.

It's getting close ---- here's who I show still from the Dodge final class...

Blake Dunham

Marcus Smith

Antonio Johnson

Derrick Teegarden

Dodge signed 9 jucos in his last class so almost half (21 total) have been gone awhile. I will give him this, of the 12 high school signees in 2010 10 of them were KEY pieces to this last season and Dunham/Teegarden have been special teams contributors so that was a damn nice percentage of high school playmakers he landed to close out his coaching career at UNT!

Off the top of my head, add Mason Y'Barbo to the list.

Zed Evans and Jamal Marshall were possibly two of the top 3 fastest guys on the team last year, but played mainly special teams and got some reps in blowouts.

I was told these guys are kinda lax and dont have that urgency and seriousness about them. At the start of the offseason, if you look at thier comments and evaluations, it says exactly the same thing. Im not saying they cant turn it around, but they need to step up. Because the ones they are competing for playing time with are on it.

IT also helps when you can remember coverages.

I WOULD BE shocked if Warner comes back full speed and starts. RIGHT NOW, FS is Zed Evans spot to lose if he can pull his head out of his ____ and study the playbook.

I agree... We have others that can fill that spot but Warner is not a lock. He has the ability and I hope he stays healthy.

Do you know which safety position John and Busby are playing, respectively?

I have it on my spreadsheet that John is playing strong safety and Busby is playing free safety.

Healthy, Warner is an excellent free safety and I believe will start. He's doing well in his workouts and he's no longer on rehab. Now, how long he lasts before he goes down again is anybody's guess. I'm thinking that Louisville knew what they were doing when they had Zed on coverage teams. He's likely the fastest player on the team but that doesn't seem to be transferring to an every down player.

They were both playing Free Safety last year. John had started out as a strong safety but the moved him to FS pretty early in the season. He actually knows both positions and the corner positions as well. Busby got a few reps at FS and was played on 1 Sp T and John started on 4 special teams and didn't see the field in a skill position last year.

Zed IS the fastest back we have with John at a close second. Busby was more seasoned at the start of last fall but moved down the depth chart.

It really is a situation of some of these players being able to remember the plays. Athletically, they are all pretty even for FS across the board. BUT, leadership and field smarts will level out who wins this spot next year. (But, I'm pretty sure Zed will start as FS. Can't see Warner being consistent.) Trice was an exceptionally smart player and made plays because of it. He was also a huge leader. My money is on possible position changes for a few of these athletes and an unclear starter up to the first conference game.
