New Names on Offseason Workout Logs

Looks like Syd Moore is doing great. If he can make an impact at d-tackle that would be very welcome, to say the least.

For those that are hoping we could somehow pull another impact d-tackle either as a high schooler who could play right away or a JUCO guys, it's looking like the chances of that are slim. But Moore could be that guy, coming from in house.

We obviously will have to wait until all signees are known but to continue to go class after class without dominate defensive linemen will keep Mac a .500 coach. At this point, I'm convinced that we will have enough bodies to run out on the field. Are any of these guys possible all league performers? Yes, some of these guys will start and play more than others. That does not make them impact guys. I'm fine with being ripped all day long but I will be disappointed if this coaching staff can't land the occasional enforcer up front.

Seems most G5 football programs rarely get 3 stars and up DL's. Think I read somewhere that most of that group seem to always want Big Time U.

Most G5's have to recruit them as projects, grow em' up in the weight room and then depend on their development aided by a good coaching staff like we have at North Texas. Perhaps, Richard Abbe being one of those kind of players and he is now even being talked up as a possible NFL draft choice.

Of the DL's listed above, I've only seen two out there on a regular basis. I've yet to see Haboul out there unless he's done a lot of special teams play (KO team etc). Only one of this group (Wallace) is 300lbs. Lincoln is 267, Orr is 272, Watson is 273, Moore is 267, and Haboul is 253. In order for them to be effective, they had better perfect their "techniques" and there had better not be any injuries during the year.

Flusche....four(?) years left.

Roberts, Flusche and Polk are converted LB's. Polk is not an every down player, he's a pass rush specialist only. And I'm not too sure about Roberts either.

9-4 in his third year without a dominate defensive lineman. I like Mac's chances of being more than a .500 coach.

To me it's not as much the weight that differentiates the Alabama's from the UAB's it's the height and weight is extremely overrated especially on defense.

I was looking at the Texas Tech signees on the offensive line last night and these guys are like 6-4. 6-5 260. But they are extremely quick and mobile.

I almost think that schools would prefer a tall kid that has good speed and quickness with a frame that they can add good weight onto as opposed to a 320 pound guy that is fat.

And looking into my crystal ball I predict that football players will begin to get smaller across the board for the following reason.

1. Chip Kelly - his style necessitates smaller, faster, quicker players. As he has more success and drafts/signs more of his style players the rest of the NFL will follow suit. As they go so goes the leagues beneath them. The resulting effect may be less concussions as well.

That's why Alabama, the team seemingly on top of the college football world, lost to A&M, Auburn, and OU. They made Bama play in space rather than in a phone booth like they wanted.

Agree Adman, with the spread offense taking over these days the need to have the 320lb DT is becoming less and less. You are seeing more of the 280lb DT who can go sideline to sideline. Even with LB's less of the 260lb MLB and more of the 215-220LB who can cover the slot if needed.

It seems to me that Mac and Skladany like the idea of having a group of some-what interchangeable line-men of similar build...Sarge, Bellezin, Mason, Boutwell, Orr, Watson, Lincoln...with one anchor like Abbe and a few speed rushers like Polk, Roberts and Brown.

Running downs its 3 250lb-ish guys with a space-eater...passing downs it's 2 or 3 250ish guys with speed on the edges.

I'm pretty confident in the likes of Lincoln, Mason and Orr. Roberts looks like he could add a few more pounds and get more into that every-down sort of end, rather than just a speed guy...but either way he and Polk recorded 5 sacks in limited work...mix in Brown and we've still a good pass rush.

The guys who really need to make strides, IMO, are Watson, Dilonga, Haboul and of course Sir Calvin Wallace.
