What might have taken place during the contract extension negotiations is that Coach Mac expressed his timeline for retiring and wanted to be guaranteed till the end of his planned career. Not a big deal if we're only talking about another 3 or 4 years added to his time remaining on his current contract, which is in year 3 of 5.

No.

Just no.

2013 was a very nice season, but there was no conference championship and failure when there was an opportunity to get one. We don't play in the SEC, folks.

3 year extension.

RV and the BOR shouldn't bite off more than they can chew (don't extend longer than you are willing to pay off).

It was 9-4, not 14-0. Lets not make decisions based on emotion.

As a rule, I agree 100%. I think if this is treated symbolically, then I have no problem with it. Obviously UNT would need to structure the "lifetime" contract so that there would be "outs" under certain circumstances. Otherwise, typical extension is advisable.

Easy on Dickey.... He wasn't a fan favorite but he did do four things Mac hasn't done for our school yet...

Like recruit DaMN State Top 100s?

I MIGHT feel better about a lifetime contract if our recruiting was leaps and bound above where it used to be and we were pulling in 4* defensive linemen.

Let's just see what the details of the deal are before we get worried. A "lifetime" contract for coach McCarney probably means around 5 years with some sort of paid administrator role after he retires.

It was a very nice season? guys it was at worst the third best season in the HISTORY of this program! I think you could make a strong argument it was the best. Look at the culture change this man has instilled. He won't coach forever but I think locking up a guy of Mac's caliber for the duration of his career is pretty unique and would serve our program extremely well in the eyes of recruits and families. After the Dodge and Dickey nightmare endings we need a stable period of growth. Mac could provide this.

This! Plus the fact that Mac is building a real D-1 program that we have never had here at NT. Who could argue that this was possibly our best season and we showed well on national TV every time we had the opportunity. I say give Mac his contract and be happy that we have him for the duration. Look at the coaching hires as well. Top notch assistants and we all know they can make or break your program. We lost coach Nelson, but may have upgraded with Coach Patrick.

Do it!

GO MEAN GREEN!

I'm all for the lifetime contract, but I would like to see one more year before we offer. I'm not expecting to see another huge improvement next season (I want to though) but I want to see how the staff handles the loss of these seniors first.

Best season in the history of the program? Not sure about that, but a great season.

The article reads "essentially a lifetime contract …thought the end of his career." A contract extension that puts him at five years under contract from his first year, with an automatic one year extension at the end of each season would fit this description. And everything I read says that's the standard head coach's deal in todays NCAA FBS game.

Plus, are we really surprised at this point, that RV would make a questionable decision involving coaching?

As my dear departed mother would say "Well, it takes two to Tango". Meaning RV's past questionable coaching (and other personnel..cough..cough Mandy) decisions could not happen without board approval.

You have another definition for "lifetime"?

I'm all ears.

I do when the sentence is written thusly: " essentially a lifetime contract for McCarney that will take him through the end of his career."

I feel like all you read in that sentence was the word "lifetime" and hit then hit the overreact button.

Mac will be 61 in July. He's had some serious health issues. I suspect the man has a plan with regard to retirement age and how long he wishes to coach coupled with his football plan for North Texas and how long he feels it will take to accomplish that.

In no way do I think he has designs on being a Joe Paterno and sticking around until he's 80+ years old. (Conjecture on my part for sure.)

But in the context of what Vito wrote "Lifetime" would mean where Mac has planned to jump off the coaching train and not until his life is over. And if I had to place a bet on what that timeline is I'd say probably around the time Mac is 65-67.

I hope we get another 5+ years out of the man myself.

Ambassador of fun. I'm okay with 3 or 4 year deal. If he continues to produce and wants to continue, then talk about more years then. I thinks that's probably what he's got planned anyway, especially with the health issues he's faced. Over extending contracts (like one's personal finances) is not a good idea in my opinion. Like others that have suggested, even the greatest of coaches lose their way or ability to adapt their philosophies with changing landscapes. Edited by filmerj

The year we lost all 5 of our IA non-conference games? I agree that was a great year but to me it's still close. The outcome of the HOD and the crowd and vibe I experienced really puts this season over the top to me. They were both great seasons for sure.

We haven't sustained anything.

We (including myself) all have faith the last two years he was correcting the problem, but until we see the next two years or more, a lifetime contract is premature.

Harry, by this same logic, should we have similarly signed Corky Nelson after the 8-4 1983 season, or Matt Simon after going 7-4 in 1994? Would that have been wise?

Top 3 season ever, for sure!, but there is a bigger picture here when it comes to long term deals.
