Mac contract consideration: Brohm at WKU

thought this was interesting in terms of what a future C-USA school is paying what I wouldn't consider a high profile name coach...

"Western Kentucky: Jeff Brohm will make an annual base salary of $600,000 and his contract will run through 2019. Brohm can earn up to $1million per year with incentives."

WKU is heavily subsidized by state funds, so I guess they can afford it. They always had the most sports and one of the biggest budgets in the Belt. It was reported In 2010 over 70% of their athletic budget was covered by transfers from their general fund. Their general fund is primarily made up of tuition payments and state funds.

My guess is that Mac's new contract will be close to these numbers. Mac certainly deserves it based on the current market, but I think HC coaching salaries are ridiculously high.

I think they're high too, but we need to pony up more than that. In my opinion we need to be in ECU numbers.

Last night I was with a group talking coachs saleries and heard something new. A number of coaches are being paid as "consultants" by large coporations in there areas. For example, Gary Patterson's total salery is almost doubled with payments from Chesapeake, various Bass family businesses and some others. Quiet promises of future consultant contracts are being given to Kingsbury at Tech as well. These dont go through the schools and thus aren't part of any FOI request possibilities. They are just there for a winning coach and can dissapear quicklly if the coach leaves.

I'm not sure I believe the size of these, but I've no doubt they exist. There is a LOT more to coaches compensation than just saleries.

WKU has money. Remember last year their head coach paid them 300k so he could coach. if you split this with the 500 k they migh usually have paid they just have something nice left over. 40% in incentives also means the salary will only be high if he performs/is retained. On top of that they clearly getdecent subsidies.

This has become increasingly common at universities and not just for coaches. One problem is who calls the shots. Does the university or the entity providing the extra compensation call the shots by the threat of withdrawing money. The situation has already happened at GA. The Foundation (independent of the Board) threatened to pull it's subsidization of the President' salary in order to get their way. Their accreditation agency was about to become involved when the Foundation backed off. What does the Golden Rule say? He with the gold rules.
