Jaded Law School Graduate takes jabs at Law School/UNT

As with the travesty at UMass, the North Texas argument is that North Texas somehow deserves a law school, not whether a new law school is needed (or whether its graduates will be able to find jobs).

If you read the description of his blog (very popular blog I might add) he went to a lower-tiered law school and has a personal vendetta against all law schools because he couldn't land a job. Not that I don't even think he doesn't have some good points, it's just the personal jabs and immaturity this guy uses that gets under my skin. In this edition he trashes UNT's new planned law school in Dallas. I think his points are a sophomoric version of what many of the critics have said, so what say you, with the law school set to open in the near future?

The biggest joke is when he talks about the HUGE amount we will be charging for tuition. Under $25K per year for out-of-state? Under $13K for in-state? Holy crap, that's really low. And he must not have a background in Econ...the reason there aren't as many lawyer positions is because people are staying in their jobs longer due to the fallout from retirement plans and other economic crap that's happened recently. By the time our law school is really moving along and has graduated a couple of classes, the "clot" will have begun to free up and you will see more positions opening due to retirement. It's just funny that he refers to a new school that hasn't even opened up as terrible. Who knows, it might end up that way, but we haven't even had a year of classes to weigh stats yet, let alone a graduating class.

Also, the primary purpose will be to serve the North Texas region, just like that of our overall mission statement. Sending people back out to other parts of the country/world is secondary, though as you can see by our enrollment it's still pulled in quite a few people from all over in terms of our main campus. With population growth, coupled with lawyers finally retiring a few years (or even a decade) late, our law school is actually timed just right, because there will be a much higher number of openings in a few years than there is right now. And with the lab component being more involved than the usual summer internships, a lot of these people will meet his blog's criteria very quickly, because many of those who do well will segue into positions where they were working throughout the course of their education. Basically he throws out a lot of very vague connections and then uses them to posit certainties via his crystal ball.

I also like how the comments totally derail the entire thing into a discussion of how chasing a life of wealth as a lawyer ruins your life. Hey, if you get greedy, don't be surprised if you trade happiness for money, and if the money also goes away eventually. People earn and lose fortunes all the time, but there are joys that you can give up without a chance to retrieve them later. If your goal is to die with a lot of money after spending the little time you had on Earth never being truly happy, then don't expect to have a very fun time. It seems most people learn this either after they've lost the truly important things or when there's not enough time left to obtain them. Hopefully more people will start to recognize all of this at a younger age and this symptom of dystopia will become more of an anomaly than a regularity.

The money the state designated for the law school? Yes, fraud and embezzlement (the likely charges for getting caught misappropriating state funds) would be a great idea. And as per the above post, the excess is partially due to delayed retirements. Over the next few years, those people will be retiring (instead of 5-10 years ago as they originally planned) and will free up a lot of jobs.
