LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegasicon1.png Mayor Carolyn Goodman is making good on a bet with the mayor of Denton, after UNLV lost a bowl game last week.

When I first saw the headline I thought maybe the mayor had placed a bet on UNT to win. That would have been awkward.

Yes it would have been awkward. Isn't it still illegal to place a bet in Nevada on the outcome of a game involving a team from Nevada?

I had been under that impression, but the HOD bowl had vegas lines. Also, I can't imagine the sports books would just have shut down back in UNLV's championship basketball runs. Like, nope. Not gonna take those hundreds of millions in handle because the team is from Nevada.

I imagine this is one of those issues that is difficult to resolve unless one were to call an active Nevada sportsbook and find someone answering the phone who is both knowledgable and patient enough to answer.

A quick google search and I found this comment on a story about an NHL team moving to Vegas. So someone in authority over the team or league or NCAA would have to request it to be illegal.

Speaking of the gambling law
The current laws in Nevada say that betting on an NHL game held in Nevada, or where one of the teams is Nevada-based, is illegal if the NHL Commissioner requests that they be illegal. This could be the main problem with having an NHL team in Vegas, just as it's a problem with an NBA team moving there.
