It's time to quit pretending.

Marshall is never going to play in an FBS national championship game like Florida State and Auburn will Monday night.

Never ever.

At least, not in the current format.

Marshall never will reach the four-team playoff that begins after the 2014 regular season. Even if the Herd goes 12-0, it still won't happen.

The five power conferences -- SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC -- simply won't allow it.

No, just no. However, someone posted on the comment block of the article. It would be very nice. All 10 conference champions along with the next 6 highest ranked teams play in a 16 team playoff. Only issue with that is that smaller conferences would get crushed. Example: Mississippi State v Rice this year, and Mississippi State was maybe the 7th or 8th best team in the SEC. They spanked our conference champ. Granted I truly don't think Rice was the best team in our conference and therefore was not the best representation in that game. Nevertheless, the playing field would be even for all conferences and all conference champions would at least have a shot instead of being snubbed by P5 money.

I agree with the problem, but not with the solution. Probably the best hope is that enough power conferences feel snubbed with the 4-team format to jack it up to an 8-team format. For example, in a year when there are no undefeated teams, playoff bids go to 2 SEC teams, 1 PAC 12 team, and 1 ACC team, while the Big 10 and Big 12 have their 1-loss conference champ sitting out. It's going to happen, probably sooner than later. That'll get the dander up of the snubbed conferences, and will have them hollering for more teams in the playoff. That would be a good time for the non-power conferences to align with the snubbed power conferences, and work out something that will at least allow us the opportunity to have a seat at the table. Even if it doesn't give autobids to all conference champs, if it includes 16 teams that at least ought to give us a shot. Several non-power 5 teams have been ranked that high before.
