Dan McCarney is a big Charlie Strong fan

Count Dan McCarney among the Strong's many peers who aren't surprised he's pushed Louisville into the national spotlight.

McCarney and Strong were assistant coaches at Florida under Urban Meyer. McCarney was defensive line coach for one of Meyer's national title wins, while Strong was UF's defensive coordinator during both of Meyer's national championship victories.

"If you follow the lead of Charlie Strong, you have a chance to be special," said McCarney, who currently is the head football coach at North Texas.

McCarney remembers introducing Strong as a speaker during a high school coaches clinic in Orlando. After praising Strong, McCarney wrapped up his comments with one simple request.

"It's about damn time he was a head football coach, too," McCarney recalled telling the crowd. He said his words were met with boisterous applause and cheering from the crowd.

Strong quickly proved he could handle the head coaching challenges at Louisville.

During three-plus seasons, Strong led the Cardinals to a 31-14 record, including 11 wins last season and the program's first BCS bowl win since 2006.

A McCarney/Strong Friendship?

Many forward thinking minds on GMG.com would eventually come up with: A home and home series versus the UL Cardinals?

Of course, after UL A.D. officials would take a glimpse at our all time W/L series record against them they could also politely decline. http://www.mcubed.net/ncaaf/series/nt/louis.shtml

GMG!

So is Strong officially Texas' coach now. I heard conflicting reports.

There is apparently a 9am meeting with Strong & the powers to be at UL. A close friend to Strong last night tweeted that Strong still hasn't decided & would decide this morning.

If y'all remember last year , Strong accepted Tennessee job only to back out a day later

I think he lands in Austin , but I don't think anything is official just yet

The timing of Mora's and Briles' declining seems to indicate they did so after they learned they weren't going to be hired.

As is the case with every coaching search, every year Coaches that were interested or who's agents were in talks with, find out they arent getting the gig and then announce they arent interested and are happy at their current job Youll see it every year

Except that in this case there were reports out of Austin that Mora WAS their short list...and then magically their interest cooled. Hmmm

Exactly.

For what it's worth, Strong's been on the short list since September. It's a good hire, in my opinion. I look forward to watching him begin his UT career 0-1.
