San Diego State defensive tackle Dan Kottman has decided to leave the program.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound sophomore, was one of only three true freshmen who played for SDSU last year. He played in eight games, and would have been the primary backup behind Sam Meredith this year if he hadn't injured his shoulder.

Kottman had shoulder surgery in the spring to repair two tears and a torn right labrum and rotator cuff. It was a major surgery that set Kottman back about six months. But his season came to an end when he had to have surgery on the shoulder again in October to clean up scar tissue.

what makes you think we landed him? A bit small for a DT position.

Yeah, I'm thinking that may have been his high school weight? He's also had major surgery on his shoulder. I wonder if he would walk on and have a year to work with our trainers to fully rehab.

This would help at the D-end spot for sure. This kids motor is the kind that coach Mac likes. He plays hard every snap. He would also help to continue tying into guyer and getting players from there. I know he and schilleci (sp) were good buddies in HS so that could have helped.

Calling on SSP for a read on this guy.

He wont be eligible next season for us unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Medical release maybe? Does that help any? But, I am guessing you are correct. Will have to sit out a year...most likely. Could give him a good year to learn the program...on and off the field as to what Mac expects, get the shoulders ready, and to perhaps bulk up ab little.

But, sometimes, when guys sit out, they never seem to be quite the same after the long lay-off. Here's hoping all goes well for young Mr. Kottman. Love having another local kid with the Mean Green. Might even help open up that Guyer pipeline a tad more for UNT. Well, that and that nice Bowl victory and 9-4 season.

Just a couple of thoughts. He is undersized for a defensive tackle but extremely strong, quick and physical if you watch his film. The guy doesn't win all state accolades at Denton Guyer and then start 8 games as a true freshman at SDSU without having some skills and ability. The injury is a concern but he's had this repaired through surgery and it sounds like he's healthy. As pointed out landing another Guyer player just helps us in creating a pipeline.

So GOOD news and welcome Dan home to the Mean Green Family! Can't wait to see him wearing green!

No, doesn't give him a chance to play immediately but he will have a chance at getting three years of eligibility starting in 2015 rather than just two which is what he should have based on his grade.

Should have a good chance to replace Alex Lincoln at the 3-technique in 2015.

Wouldn't he only have 2?

Played as a freshman, redshirted this year, and will sit next year (redshirt Soph season) leaving him eligible his junior and senior year.

I'm not worried about his shoulder. We have the Wintrich factor. If he transfers in over the break (in the next few days) and has to sit out next season, he'll have 20 months to rehab and build strength in that shoulder.

great minds think alike
