WACO, Texas Mike Barela was named one of three finalists for the 2013 AFCA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Each year, staff representatives from NCAA and NAIA football-playing schools are asked to nominate an assistant for consideration. From those nominations, a winner is selected by the AFCA Public Relations Committee. The winners of this award were selected from Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, and the NAIA.

Barela, Northeastern State's offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, coached three all-conference performers in junior left tackle Ethan James, sophomore left guard Ross Dvorak and redshirt freshman center Hudson Baab. No other position for the RiverHawks had more than one honoree this season.
