And you're relying on all-world linebackers - every successful 3-3-5 team (or "stack" defense) has stud linebackers and a very good or even great 3-man DL. In theory, the 3-3-5 should work well against spread offenses, but it's very high-risk, high-reward and requires a really high level of talent to be successful.
Unless a really rich guy bank-rolls a UNT NIL, we're not going to have the money to bring in 3-3-5 talent. Much better to run a defense that protects the box and can put pressure on the QB with 2 end rushers, even without all-world talent.
Let's assume the PAC 6 snags Memphis, Tulane, and UTSA. Hopefully we could replace them with AFA and TSU. The AAC need not go wild and crazy adding teams that bring no media value to the conference. When the conference media rights contract is renegotiated we are going to take a hit. Plus someone must pay the MWC $17 million exit fee to get the AFA and any other team from their conference.
Personally I had no issue with the walk. That was just the excuse I would hear when I was in school. Honestly, I think it was just that, an excuse. UNT was very good my freshman year and the fan turnout was still meh. A lot of the student body just isn’t connected to sports. I’m not trying to make a political statement here AT ALL, but this may just be the reality as a liberal arts school, idk.
Bennett’s philosophy was to steal as many possessions as possible to put the O back on the field. Generating turnovers and just generally making sure we had more possessions than the bad guys was the goal. After watching this new staff for a year and change I have no clue what they want to do.
