Any of you guys know of any jewelers in town that make or have UNT rings? Also, has anyone ever seen a ring with the SOW on it (besides some version of the class ring)?

Wouldn't that have to be licensed by UNT, as the SOW is protected under copyright law?

For an unlicensed company or jeweler to make a jewelry piece that has some trademarked logo, the logo has to be changed 30% for it to be legal. For example the UT logo would have to lose the ears and shorten the horns. If you can find a custom, independent jeweler they might do it. However that jeweler takes the risk of being sued by the trademark holder and its a pretty hefty fine. That being said, most independent jewelers are really under the radar, but its still a big risk for them.

SOW isn't under copyright yet, but supposedly UNT has the gears in motion and applications filed to bring it back under its fold officially.

I would disagree with that and add that the flying worm is pending. Use it, sell it, and you will get a little visit from the university. Remember those shirts we bought earlier in the year? There was no anger, no animosity, but it did garner attention, a visit, and a discussion of pending copyright.

I know it is trademarked. Not sure about copyrighted. Also, yes, the Worm is under pending approval because the university wants to use it more often.

I get those terms confused. Bottom line, there is one print shop in Denton you can pay a royalty to for personal use and another you can pay a licensing fee for resale.

Right around the beginning of my freshman year, I heard a rumor that the Philadelphia Eagles got one of their logos from UNT. Is there any truth to that?

Anyway, you could follow the above or you could just get a UNT ring from Jostens. Alumni from any era can get one. The eagle isn't SOW, but it's still pretty cool. And the price is pretty good too, since the contract (unless it's been changed) gives us a break on the cost since they do so many for us.
