The idea seems to make sense and it’s something that UT Arlington coach Scott Cross has been advocating for the past few years. Why not have all four Metroplex teams play against each other in a round-robin format every year?

It could help create more interest in college basketball during the football season and draw bigger crowds for nonconference games with the area schools — TCU, SMU, North Texas and UTA — playing against each other.

Something like the “Metroplex 4” could help keep the college basketball buzz going after the Final Four arrives in Arlington in April.

“I just think it would be an outstanding event,” Cross said. “Any time you have two local schools playing against each other, you have the biggest crowds. They are just natural rivalries.”

Philadelphia area teams already do something along those lines with the city’s “Big 5” — Penn, La Salle, Saint Joseph’s, Temple and Villanova.

Didn't SMU/TCU have a 4 team tournament early in the season, or did I just dream they did?At any rate, SMU doesn't want to play us in basketball, and I don't think TCU wants to play UTA.

Every school is more concerned with covering their ass than actually having a fun event for the fan base of each school. Right now it would be SMU and the three also rans....SMU would dominate this 'tournament' right now.

I have been advocating this idea for a long time and even have an idea for a name for this round robin - The "Trinity Series", with the winner winning the Trinity Cup. With DART. DCTA and the TRE we even a have way for students and fans to attend many games on public transportation. I don't know why we have not been doing this for years as it would create rivalries and save on traveling expenses. IT WOULD BE FUN AND IT IS REALLY STUPID NOT TO DO IT.

This idea has made sense for many years. There are many financial, PR and other advantages for all four schools. Now that we have a basketball-savvy Pres. and AD, maybe they can find a way to nudge their Metroplex counterparts and get past whatever issues have stood in the way.  I have no definitive information on the impediment(s), just an assumption of snobbery.
