Don't know why this guy was suspended. He just spoke what was in his heart.

I don't agree with it, but every buddy has the right to say what they believe, no matter who it offends.

Yes and every company has the right to fire someone they employ for publicly creating controversy when he knew well what type of publicity his statements would bring. Might even be in the contract honestly. And he was suspended for mentioning homosexuality and bestiality in the same sentence..

Can't believe i've been sucked into one of these threads. Is it too late to back out?

Just wait til you hear protests about how this is more proof of the liberal media being anti-Christian.

A&E knew or should have known how Phil is and how he is very free in expressing his beliefs. I think it really falls on the network more in this case.

Phil probably doesn't care at all that he was suspended and would love to never see cameras in his house that aren't being run by Jep.

Yeah well my boss might know that I believe he's an a-hole, but if I walk into his office and tell him that, i'd show myself the door.

A reality tv figure being interviewed by GQ Magezine and after being asked questions about his religious beliefs gives a list of sins, to you is the same as walking into your bosses office and calling him an asshole?

Quite the stretch there I think, but your entitled to your opinion.

In modern employment, that is exactly what things are like. Corporations search facebook and twitter profiles of candidates, and often times monitor profiles of current employees. Say the wrong thing in a public forum, and expect a knock on your cubicle wall from the friendly lady in HR.

I am near cloak and dagger secretive about where I work. It is expressly written in our employee handbook that our conduct, actions, and words on our private time are ours...until anybody who sees or hears such conduct, words, or actions can identify us as employees of the firm. Then we are held liable for anything that might reflect poorly, and let me tell you, just about everything is deemed to reflect poorly.

I keep my online presence locked up pretty tight. I don't know that my firm goes actively searching for activity, but I take no chances.

As for the duck guy, he probably holds his beliefs to be a higher priority than his relationship with A&E, and that's fine. A&E probably sees things a little differently, and believe his words to reflect poorly on their image.

They've stated they are supportive of the gay community, and I can almost guarantee there is a clause in their contract that states something about the way they conduct their interviews. Most likely including: any interview you do will be reflected as opinions of this station because of our affiliations, so as a public figure be careful of what you say in interviews. Lots of people have gotten in trouble for this type of thing before.

I don't know that I would personally disagree with anything that he said. However, he did put it in a somewhat over-the-top, graphic, Fake-Lonnie-esque way that he had to know would not make a bunch like A&E very happy. 20 years ago, comments like these would not have affected his job status or called for any kind of renunciation from his employer. But we're in a very different climate now.

who cares A&E has made it clear they do not agree with their Christian Values, so hope the Robertson's say FU and go on their way and keep collecting millions while A&E loses millions of viewers and $$$, while promoting meet my three mommies to make GLAAD happy.

If you don't want his opinion ten don't ask the question. 1-2% of population getting butt hurt and turning words tries to ruin lives. PC run amok.

I don't watch the show, but they HAD to know his beliefs before hand. Here's the thing about rural people, of all races, they are often very devout in their beliefs. I believe that he had also said something along the lines of he treats people with respect regardless of their beliefs. The quote, like many others, appear to have been taken out of context. I heard a report of another personality state someting along the lines of "He's a redneck and all rednecks are bigots." Yet noone seems to give a damn about that quote. If you want to apply rules on speech, you HAVE to do it on all sides. You don't get to pick and choose.

But if they did that, and then followed it up with a public announcement saying he does NOT represent the views of the affiliate, doesn't that open the door for lawsuits because of a statement conflicting with contract?

Who cares though? TV is stupid.

This a subject where I hardly doubt there will be a really big middle ground agreement.

I've been going with the "free market" argument with those who may swing right. It's a free market, are you saying we can't fire people anymore? Are you supporting unions now?
