I've opened up about this before, but for those who don't know, I've been hospitalized for attempting suicide, though I won't bother you with the details. It was a long time ago, so don't worry, but it's something that is usually hidden and so many people aren't comfortable discussing. The problem is that many of those people who feel "uncomfortable," like my parents, do everything possible to hide problems instead of dealing with them. If I had read this very short (about 2 pages) article 20 years ago (before it was written, of course), my life would have been very different.

Please don't ignore this very important issue that faces nearly every family at some point, whether it involves your kids, siblings, cousins, nieces/nephews, etc. I hope that this simple analysis will guide some of you to review additional literature and ensure the safety of the wonderful children in your lives. Depression very rarely goes away; it usually lingers until there is another crisis, sometimes years later, and many times there isn't someone around to intervene when it resurfaces. The best way to combat depression is to provide a means to navigate those thoughts and feelings whenever they arise.
