University of Wyoming just hired their new head coach on Sunday - the head coach from North Dakota State - who is in the process of going for their third straight FCS championship. The thing that make me scratch my head, was the his base salary is $750,000 with chance to get up to $1.2 million with incentives. Maybe with his contract extension, McCarney can get higher than the $500,000 base he is making.

"Scratch your head"? That's not out of line for Mountain West pay, although it is toward the top end. But Wyoming's previous coach's salary is listed at $1.2 million.

And yes, we are going to need to up the ante if we want to play big boy ball.

I thought Wyoming had money especially since they're the state university there. But yes McCarney needs a significant raise. He needs to be be number 2 ahead of Stockstill.

Who's going to be #1 after ECU leaves? I assume WKY, at $850k per year? I think we need to approach that.

Ah yes good point. I didn't think about ECU leaving. I would think we could lead the conference then. Surely we can match or top 850k no?

I'd be surprised. That would be a pretty big jump, and we're already around double what we were paying the pevious regime. But it seems those were the kind of numbers we heard being thrown around when we were looking to hire a new coach to replace Coach Dodge.

Something could be wrong if we couldn't go to 700 or 750 per season and adding an extra year or two to his deal. But then again I'm no expert when it comes to this sort of thing and how much we really do have.

No, that's about the range I would expect . . . but topping $850k may be asking a little much for us at this point. If I'm wrong, great.

For some reason, and I could be wrong, but I had in mind that Coach Mac is currently earning $600k in base salary. It would be huge if we could somehow get him in the $700k range. That would represent such a giant leap from where we have been. It would be simple to afford if we could just start averaging 26k - 28k in attendance.

Wasn't Wyoming an FCS move-up just a few years back as well? If so then I think that bugs me even more. Yeah, we got screwed by the 15-year dip to 1-AA, but it's been almost 2 years since we moved back up and we're just now on the verge of being the type of program we were through the 70's, and are still stuck where we were then, wondering if we can keep a really good coach from bolting by paying him enough to hang around.

To quote Vito as of a few days ago when I wrote about it:

"McCarney is paid a base salary of $475,000 under the terms of his current deal. He also receives a $35,000 payment at the completion of each season and a $35,000 stipend for appearing on UNT’s radio and television programs."

I'd bet that there are bonuses in his contract for things like

1. Going undefeated in the regular season

2. Winning a conference championship

3. Going to a bowl game

4. Winning a bowl game

5. Winning a body bag game

6. Going undefeated at home

7. Winning a Grey Goose shots contest on Fry St.

etc.

Wyoming has been FBS for a long time.

I think Mac will be fine. He's not going anywhere and he's happy with his pay. Let's not overpay just for the sake of having a high paid coach. We are on the way to something sustainable and good here. Now, let's beat the hell out of UNLV.
