DRC: Saturday afternoon bowl update

Happy Holidays.

Are you talking about this?

Since he's in charge as UNT prez' and all department's bosses report to him, he can influence the setting of attendance goals and may even suggest quotas for those whose job it is to promote and market. Something few of us have seen in Denton of late.

Remember when some of you ask just about every August:

How many season tickets have we sold? Also recall how no one ever gets an answer for such a simple question?

If your happy with our attendance why waste your time in the discussion? It's a cinch that Coach DMac and his team cannot be happy with the turnstiles count.

If it were me I'd immediately enter "Setting Management's Expectations" mode if quotas are set, especially if Management does nothing to help me get to said goals. Just because a goal is set doesn't mean it can be reached unless meaningful action (with the backing of Management) is taken.

I swear some people have never lived/worked in the real world.

Unless I am forgetting something the AF Bowl was a possibility that came into play because bowls would be trading spots in order to get Notre Dame somewhere besides the Pinstripe bowl. CUSA was interested because it had two Texas teams (NT/Rice) that it wanted to send to bowls in Texas.

Well, now that ND has officially accepted the Pinstripe bowl, and Rice has accepted a bid to the Liberty... there is no need for that trade.

We are going to be in the Heart of Dallas.

Shouldn't you be blasting the 100k+ alumni living DFW?

Why do that when some on this board who as UNT students or alums have never seen a HFC leave Denton above .500 are suddenly experts about what all that should be done in Denton? Even more interesting is how some of that group keep preserving mediocrity at North Texas with staffers who no on else in the NCAA are interested in hiring; least of all interviewing.

Coach DMac will need a bigger bandwagon for some UNT staffers to jump on to preserve their own futures in Denton---and that whether we have a filled Apogee or not; whether we have effective marketing programs or not, etc, etc, etc,. Effective? When you see sellouts of a 31,000 seat stadium of which 6 million DFW citizens live within an hour of that stadium. Such a tough sell for some.

First, Marshall is state supported. Secondly, it not Denton's total responsibility to fill seats. Thirdly, Denton is inhabited by human beings who will respond to proper marketing of the team. Fourthly, it is time for someone's head to roll in the athletic department who cannot get a sell out at Apogee. If you work for North Texas athletics, you better eat it, sleep it and dream it or you are not doing your job.

Moot point.

I'll draw you a picture of a brick wall and you can continue your discussion with that.

If you're not part of the answer then your part of the problem. Empty seats should even tell you that unless you have a fetish for empty seats.

My last response to you on this subject...now go enlighten someone else.

Winning goes a long way to helping helping fill the stadium, something that hasn't happened very much the last 10 years.

How pleasant it must be to be in NT's promotions department. Forever having "well, if we won Apogee would sell itself" to fall back on. Why go the extra mile in the meantime...our fans will alibi FOR you.

Counting down to the "We're 8-4. How could anyone not see everything as rosy?" posts.

Only on this board, in a post about our first bowl game in a decade, first bowl game in our own backyard, first bowl game on New Year's Day in our first year in CUSA when we were picked to finish 5th can someone, DallasGreen, piss all over it and find something negative to derail it. What a total ass whipping!

Can you imagine that department now if not for one man's success this Fall? That man being being Dan McCarney.

Like I posted before, I hope Coach DMac's bangwagon will be large enough to hold all those who need to ride his coattail as to stick around another 10 years. Everyone already forgot our last 9 prior to this one? That's what I thought.

I'm sure it's Dodge's fault.

I'm not making excuses for the promotions department. Just stating that we've been missing a vital component to help getting people to games.

If you look at the Rangers winning has helped them reach all time attendance records the past couple seasons. There are still marketing and promotions taking place but the return is way better given their winning.

I see marketing and promotions all the time yet I rarely feel compelled to go out and buy their product. Marketing and promotions only works so much. What I think is missing is the response to North Texas Athletics where people feel like they are missing out on something if they don't go.

This is the pertinent part that makes the comparison void.

I won't use the multiquote function since I'd have to quote half the thread...

This argument won't go anywhere because everybody either has a specific way they would like to see it done or a specific person or group or department that they want to blame. The important thing is to go back to the root and consider our new President Smatresk, and hope that "the buck stops here" as far as his attitude. If he is all he's advertised to be, he should be able to create a coalition of everyone from students and alumni to Dentonites to everyone working on behalf of the University.

Most of the promotions ideas every one of you has pressed for would require little to no funding, so why not set up a list and then have everyone sign off on it in petition form, to be delivered by a person or small group (Mark? Emmitt? Rick? Maybe some people who often have polarized opinions would be an even more unifying answer, so there are a bunch of you that could come together on this). Tell him these are some ideas to help get the ball rolling as your way of helping him out as a welcome gift or something from spirited fans and alumni that hope to see him succeed. As long as he's not overly egocentric (lord, I hope not, but this would be a good way to find out), he'd probably be glad to have the input, especially from a core group of supporters.

Look, you guys have probably noticed that when you start arguing I don't take one side very often over the other, because I think pretty much everything coming from you is very valid based on your point of view, and feeling like you're running into a brick wall for years can cause a lot of frustration that can heighten the arguments. So why not use those differences as a strength and combine them all into one meta-proposal in hopes that our new leader is as good as we wished? All of these things can happen with the proper leadership, as has been pointed out here. No leader can be effective without support, so why not take the first step and show him that you want to be a part of his support structure in order to help him be successful on everyone's behalf? If everyone keeps egos and arguments out of the mix for one or two combined efforts, this next year could be huge, not only for athletics and attendance, but for a huge surge in alumni and future alumni retention (and involvement, and donations, and and and...).

Well?

Guys, didn't read most of the thread, but I can tell you that UNT has been promoting well and we are 99.9% sure we are headed to HOD. Just have one last box to check. Oh man, this has been one hell of a year with this week and bye weeks being miserable and most game days out of this world!

The Armed Forces Bowl is a good bowl. I wish C-USA could have added it to our lineup. I like Navy too, but we can get them in Denton in our OOC schedule.

I want Michigan State to beat Ohio State. I want to watch North Texas play Michigan or Nebraska on New Years Day at the Cotton Bowl. I want North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Why do we want michigan state to win? What does that do for us?

Bumps OSU out of the title game, so they go into one of the other bowls, and it bumps everybody in their conference down a notch in bowl selections, making it almost certain we would play a Big 10 team instead of an at-large fill-in from another conference.

Makes sense. Cool. Thanks man!
