Here's the deal though, guys that are against an extension: One 8-win season and a bowl appearance (hopefully a bowl win, to boot!) is enough to get the attention of the poachers out there.

We know there will be firings and we know that will trigger a coaching carousel. I can guarantee you a school that is above us in the pecking order will be eyeing what Coach Mac has done here and will entertain the thought of pulling him away.

A competitive and fair contract extension would help deter him from entertaining some of those thoughts, himself.

Not to mention, it shows recruits that we're committed to Coac Mac.

I would agree with that with one exception. Dan McCarney is 60 years old, not 40. He's no spring chicken and he's already had a go around in a BCS conference. If he was younger, then yes, I'd say give him the big extension. Unless a lucrative offer came along, I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon. As far as extension goes, well, I see both sides of wanting to show commitment but also expecting more than just a one year success. Personally, I'd like to see some of our assistant coaches with contract extensions as other schools will almost certainly be looking at UNT for assistant coaches.

Don't disagree, but why is Benford still here?? What are we waiting for to make a move there?!?

We need to extend DMac, and put a little more in the pot for his assistants. I'd just like to see us do everything possible to keep as much of this football staff together as we possibly can. If you think we've got enough donor backing to do both, great. I hope you are right.

Really, my first post was fishing for some fly on the wall insider to pop in and reassure us that all is well and not to worry....not all these replies debating whether or not to extend DMac's contract. We need to extend DMac. Maybe not for 10 years to life, but he needs a reasonable extension. Anyone who says otherwise is just wrong.

Benford is still here because even Western Kentucky waited 1 and 1/2 years to correct their mistake. You have to give them a chance.

For Mac, 3-4 year extension sounds right. It's not just one winnin season. It's an immediately better record in his first year. It's the improvement in the second even though the record slid backwards, I felt better about it than the year before. Now it's this year and other people noticing that UNT has a great coach, who is charismatic and cares about UNT, which other people not associated with UNT noticed in year 1.

Well, since most on this board have never talked to Mac, I doubt Vito was speaking to anyone on here. It was just an observation on Mac's personality, which has always been exactly what UNT needed.

Again, fan boards really aren't that important in real life. I think we need to get over ourselves.

You're wrong. It has been proven, PROVEN I TELL YA, that football games can be lost because of message board smack talk (and not a poor game plan or uninspired effort). Don't you EVER forget the UTSA game!

Smoke and fire. Rumor is if nd vs Boise happens, rice may be in the AF if they lose the ccg and mt if rice wins. This would mean unt is in HoD. But if rice complains about the same matchup in te same bowl they played in last year I could see a UNT Rice swap HoD for AF.

Would be same bowl , but Rice played Air Force last season in the armed forces bowl ( FT worth)

Navy has already accepted this years Armed forces bid

I'd love to see us play Navy. Would be a packed house in a very winnable game.... I just don't know if I could get Monday off! I'm already off Tuesday & Wednesday..
