Anyone else notice during the bowl years, with the exception of 2004 when they broke even, our basketball team struggled when the football team was winning?

2002- Football 8-5 (Won NO Bowl) Basketball -7-21

2003 - Football 9-4 (Lost NO Bowl) Basketball - 13-15

2004 - Football 7-5 (Lost No Bowl) Basketball - 14-14

On the flip side when basketball is doing well...

2007- Basketball 20-11, Football - 2-10

2008 - Basketball 20-12, Football 1-11

Etc...

Let's see if we can turn that around this year. I think having a winning football and basketball program in the same year would mean a lot for our athletics program.

It seems that unless you are one of the super rich colleges, you struggle to maintain both football and basketball. Even Duke has not been much in football until lately. In Texas, if you cannot do both well, let's do football....many more people notice football success. In a perfect world we could do both.

I don't know that they're inversely proportional. Wasn't Florida winning national titles in both sports at the same time? Now they are both down. Well, basketball is still pretty good, but they aren't winning national titles.

I think he means that schools like UNT that are ballin' on a budget have trouble being good at both. I agree with him I think having a strong football program gets donations in that eventually get funneled to basketball too whereas some teams that are only strong basketball teams may not get enough to help out football too.

It's not just North Texas. It's almost every university in Division 1A.

The perennial basketball powers that play both sports are Kentucky, Kansas, Memphis, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville, Indiana, UNLV, Temple and Connecticut, to name a few, usually do not have good football.

When you think of football you think of Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Nebraska, Florida, Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida State, USC, and Ohio State. Rarely do those schools produce good basketball and it seems that in the years that they have, football suffered.

A few have balanced the two sports with moderate success, such as UCLA, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Michigan, but are not #1 in either (although UCLA certainly has been #1 in basketball).

Thanks for the insight. Now, I know why Southern Miss is doing poorly in football.

Ohio State has been making deep runs in March for the last several years. Since 2007 - they've had two Final Fours (including making the National Title game), and Elite Eight, and two Sweet 16's. In that time, their football team has been really good.

Florida was winning national titles in both in the mid 00's (including the same season once!).

The best years in NT basketball and football were simultaneous. Joe Greene, Ramsey, etc. football in late sixties and Hamilton, Whitaker, Winfield basketball team in MVC. Fry winning football and Blakeley three straight 20 win basketball teams including the best record ever 22-4.

In my opinion the best years in football and basketball were in the late sixties. The second best for both sports also occurred at the same time in the mid seventies.

Wasn't around to witness that but from what I hear we also incurred massive debt to make that happen. Would love to see that happen again, though.
