Mac and the QB

This past Sat. Gossellin did a story on the success of shorter QBs , both in the pros and college. Manziel, Brees, Wison(Seattle).I would add the guy from Tech and Sosa of UTEP. Mac has stated that he wants larger QBs.

Texas today is leading the nation in QBs playing at both the College and Pros. If we are never going to get the 5 or 4 star QB why not go after the 5'10" and 6' guys?

Has UNT ever had a guy that we could trust throwing that many out patterns as Sosa?

We don't run a spread offense where those kind of guys thrive, unfortunately. Under center, play action stuff is usually more suited for taller guys and that's what we run. Although I would be perfectly fine with getting an undersized kid if he turned out to be a stud. It doesn't matter what offense you run, you need your qb to be accurate and be able to make the throws when you need them.

He didn't just quit us, he quit the game entirely. I would rather have had him quit than lose his "intangible" and just go through the motions. We've had entirely too much of that already.

I agree with that. But as far as pure ability, he was probably the best we've had take the field since Mitch Maher, and he may have been better.

1st off Soza played a heck of a game. Their OC called plays that fit what he did best. He didn't throw a lot of down the field out pattern stuff. It was quick screen and quick hitches. He was accurate enough to place balls in the void between our LBs and DBs too.

I thought Chico did a bad job of putting Derek in unfavorable situations. We forced the passing game.

You don't need a big tall QB to be successful in our offense or any play action stuff. You need to be accurate and have a strong arm. If you've got those two things your going to be successful. The small QBs who are successful at running a prostyle offense are very good at finding the passing lanes so you don't see a lot of batted down balls. See Russell Wilson and Drew Brees.

Really doesn't matter if it's short or tall QB. There isn't an exact science on how to get a successful QB. A lot of it is development, luck, system etc.

Agreed. But that's a pretty small sample size. And Brock has yet to throw a pass for us. I'm assuming M_G09 has watched a considerable amount of practice to make that statement.

I think we should, but Mac seems pretty confident in his system. We might see more spread principles, I hope we do, and we should. But will we?

Why do we keep riding the quarterback who is spotty? I know, we have had a great season, but when it is over, no one has had a chance to touch the ball much. We will go into next season with no one with game experience.

I base my decision on every game, and warm-up I've seen. I've seen him play both in high school and college. Film don't lie. Go back and watch his recruiting tape if you want to. 90% of his passes hit the WR in stride. They aren't having to slow down or dive for something. He gets the ball to the WR's hands when under pressure too, which is probably the most important thing. His delivery is solid and confident. His footwork is more consistent than DT to. You don't see the back foot problem. The kid has the skills to really stretch the field vertically. He didn't get to throw a lot in a run based offense, but when he did he was efficient and effective. I believe he has the tools to be a really good QB for UNT. Was he ready to take the job this year probably not. He needed some time to develop his strength, arm and body. I see him behind a really good OL having a terrific year. This offense next year has a chance to be really good with his skill set.

They're both very talented. Whoever can be more consistent, can command the offense better, and can stay healthy will win the job.

I really hope that whoever isn't our starter between Dajon and Brock is our backup. I hope we utilize both of their running abilities, and if we are you always have to be weary of injury to your qb and have a capable backup ready.

Yeah I tend to be bold. I trust what I see. I also trust a QB from Texas who played in the upper divisions (4A) over a kid from Colorado. I think the competition is greater and the development of QB's is better in high school here in Texas more so than everywhere else. Brock may have some talent, but I have my doubts about him. If he had the ability that everyone projected him to have he wouldn't have ended up here at UNT. He would have at least been a back somewhere else. Not a 3rd or 4th string guy at UNT.

Brock is probably the best quarterback on the team but he cannot run the offense. DT has one thing going for him and that is leadership and reading the defense. Brock and Dajon cannot do that (yet). The thing I do not get is they will not be able to do that if they do not get in! I dislike Thompson as much as anyone but when we never played anyone else up by 20 with minutes left I knew we were stuck with him.

If he cant run the run the offense he is not the best QB. It's not a complicated offense. If your a QB and cant read the defense then your not the best QB.

Dajon has more upside than Brock in all categories in my book. Derek was the right QB for this team this year. The other choices simply weren't good enough at the time.

I was referring to the aspects of his game like footwork,speed, arm strength, and accuracy. If we just walked onto the field and ran some plays and never changed he would be solid but yea he cannot read the defense. I hope he learns over the summer. He and Dajon could be exciting to watch next year.
