I just thought it might be best to be tied for 1st in West than to be 3rd behind UTSA and Rice. Also, UTSA can go to bowl if there are not enough 6&6 schools, or if they are granted a waver, which could happen if they are in CUSA championship game. Just an old man's opinion.

There's not a scenario (I don't think) in which we can be in a tie for the west and UTSA not go to the championship game. Does it really make a good statement for the conference if the equivalent of an FCS school is playing for the title?

They can't be granted a waiver unless there aren't enough teams eligible for a bowl. Right now it appears there will be more than enough teams eligible for the bowl slots. For example the Belt may have 4 teams eligible and only 2 slots to place them. UTSA would only be able to apply for a waiver once the two remaining belt teams get spots. It sux for UTSA but they are still a transitional program.

It doesn't suck. It is the rules the agreed to, if they didn't want the transitional period they could have stayed in FCS. Same thing happened to USF and FAU, they had bowl eligible teams during their transitional period but couldn't go.
